    Do you hedge?

mcgene4xpro - why does it matter what "professional traders" say? Shouldn't you (in general not you) do what's best for you in terms of risk management? Talk to the so called professional traders that didn't hedge after the '87 crash, 9/11, etc. You didn't just take a loss - you were wiped...

Any good practical option greeks book that help me practice those greeks?

Nastynate - I agree put options are in general overvalued since the '87 crash (esp after the housing bust) b/c of a persistent bid for downside protection. However, that doesn't mean they can't become more overpriced during a black swan. For example, you sell an "overvalued" put for 2.5 b/c...

What are the Best Stocks to RTM Trade?

dwpeters - most of the time this strategy works (more so for sector/industry and market etf's than individual stocks) however you MUST use a stop loss. Larry Connors says to buy weakness/sell strength w/ no stop which is suicide. I know this b/c I've done it before saying "the market is sooooo...

    Profit from vol

oriole - the def of bad luck: getting banned from ET on your first post. Anyways, you can profit from vol like you mentioned (straddle/strangle) w/ no directional bias or you can play the short side by buying puts or ratio spreads (my preferred strategy due to asymmetric return profile =...

My account value reaches $600,000 for the first time; launching incubator hedge fund

As Heech said, that's beta not alpha. There is tremendous pressure on HFs to reduce fees now, DE Shaw being a the most recent example. And that's an institutional firm (not 2 guys w/ a bloomberg terminal) w/ a proven track record. Investors will not pay 2 & 20 for beta. Re shorting vol...

    Tax Preparation

+1 for tradelog as spindr0 said. In my opinion, the best solution is tradelog + turbotax. For those afraid of an audit, turbotax offers a service for $40 that will help you with the IRS in case of an audit. This could be a steal at 10x the price. Strongly suggest looking through the tradelog...

    Catastrophic event

+1 Proflogic. The SPX was below the 10, 20, 50 and 200 DMA BEFORE 9/11. No one can predict a black swan like a terrorist attack but trading with the trend would have meant you were short already or in cash. Here's some interesting info re that "suspicious" put activity in UAUA and AMR...

    Catastrophic event

Surprise - On the morning of 9/11, futures immediately went locked limit down and the stock market closed soon after.

    Catastrophic event

Victor8 - Selling naked options ties up margin so that has to be taken into consideration. Whenever I hear about selling calls and buying puts (or the opposite) I think about Eric Bolling talking about a "texas hedge" because instead of reducing risk you're increasing it. Businessman - You...

    Catastrophic event

Scalping ES (or any leveraged instrument) w/o being hedged is like playing russian roulette every day. Instead of playing the odds of eating a bullet (1 in 6) you play the odds of being taken out by a black swan (1 in a really large number). You can prevent this by only shorting as the OP...

Trading computer + 3 Samsung 19 inch monitors + Ergotron stand

You're right LEAPup. Selling everything for that low price would be almost as foolish as accepting anything less than 100 cents on the dollar for my portfolio of vintage 2007 CDOs lol. Sandeater check your PM.

Trading computer + 3 Samsung 19 inch monitors + Ergotron stand

I've used an ergotron stand for 3 years and I've never had any problems with it. It's made out of aluminum/steel and is extremely well built. LEAPup I wouldn't worry about it being unstable b/c it's not. Not only do you save desk space but you also get a more streamlined setup.
