    Spy Iv

With the following knowns: SPY share price effectively at $116.30 1 day to expiration The 117 call was $1.91 For a broad market index thats huge IV, perhaps 80-90%? In a broad sense that would indicate a VIX of around the same figure (80-90). Most would conclude that the call was...

    09-18-2008: we hit bottom today

When the VIX hit 42 I plugged my nose and sold (to close) SPY puts and bought OCT OTM calls. Certainly not an all or nothing bet though.

    Spy Iv

Here's a perfect example of perhaps the futility of trying to figure if options are expensive. The previous post indicated a very expensive SPY call (broad market) at $1.91. Closes a couple hours later for $3.40. The 'expensiveness' said that SOMETHING was going to happen.

    Spy Iv

Wow. With the SPY at $117.00 at 1:44 PM, a 117 call expiring TOMORROW is $1.91. Wow. That's some serious IV. btw, had to sell a couple puts (to close) when the VIX hit 42. edit: The SPY goes ex-dividend tomorrow so another .70 will be shaved off the SPY price. Even more IV. $1.91 for a...

Why the market will close higher on FRI

I gave that consideration, but the SPY had a 117 handle earlier in the day, and I think it is more likely the market moves up than revisit the lows of the morning. We'll see in a couple days. SPY was at 121.00 at the time. Again, my main point is the JUICE was a tell. It's all odds, nothing...

Why the market will close higher on FRI

Here's my opinion why the SPY will close higher than 121.00 (it's current price as of Tues 3:47) At that time when the stock was at 121.00 the price of a 121 call with expiry this Friday was $1.85 (3:47) EXPENSIVE. There was a great temptation to sell some of that juice, but I came to...

Did the Plunge Protection Team have a meeting on 9/13/08?

Well for one thing, protection from plunges could be small support for the existence of the PPT. If the dow closes >+100 tomorrow, then I will perhaps believe. Otherwise, I'll pass on the tinfoil hat.

    Capitulation

Shoulda sold those calls coach :D I don't think too many are treating these as momentary drops. There is a survivorship bias going on. Those who are left here are either good or lucky. Either way, we can slowly pick through the rubble. With the series of banks each providing $7B liquidity...
