iv'e found ROC helpful to some degree giving volatility a value. i have noticed on flat days or days with very narrow range/low volatility (S & P eMini 5 minute charts), ROC values will usually stay contained within 1.7 to -1.7 range. when volatility picks up it will break out of this area...

I use VWAP and SMA 60. when price breaks through both and then pulls back to find support at or around one of the two, preferably sma60, i begin to look for a trade in the new direction. also i keep an eye on significant support, resistance areas and major trendlines.

I would highly suggest reading the book 'Way of the Turtle - the secret methods that turned ordinary people into legendary traders' by Curtis Faith. its a very quick read....week to get through it and easy to understand plain english. not for any secret trading methods but for its serious...
