How do you guys store tick data?

If you have budget for KDB you won't regret. Alternatively, flat files. Most relational databases are too inefficient at extracting long linear sequences of data.

You are more likely to become a top Hollywood actor or popstar than profitable trader

Maybe this is a trick question and the key word "short-term". Truely successful traders seem to inevitably do a few longer term trades.

picking trades vs taking all signals

I believe the best approach would be to alter rthe system in such a way that it takes the number of trades you can actually take. Perhaps, add restrictions on trading hours and frequency of trades. Does the system add to an existing position?

    Is it true?!

You can do it with most platforms, not just Currenex. Just use a limit order. Currenex may offer slightly better chance for such an order being filled.

Interactive Brokers stealing a few cents from everyone?

Do you imply I am an IB representative? Or do I miss the point of your post entirely?

Leave stop loss and target or exit early?

    I wonder if it's a Freudian misprint....

Is buying naked calls a stupid way of being long?

I respectfully disagree here. Around at-the-money point, where the most liquidity is, the option premium is determined primarily by the volatility and time to expiration. It's only when the price of the underlying experiences a substantial move, the contribution of the difference between the...

Is buying naked calls a stupid way of being long?

There is a recent thread on these forums which discusses this exact issue in great detail. In brief: 1. You need a substantial price move in your favour before you start making any money by executing an option. 2. Option price is primarily determined by volatility. So, you buy options in...

If you want to fail as a trader, study TA

If you hold a position for weeks at a time based on fundamentals you might want to pass the responsibility to close the position to someone more attuned to the market.... while you do your research to find new trades.

If you want to fail as a trader, study TA

A few people have a broker (person) they can trust to close a (trend) position intelligently.

Interactive Brokers stealing a few cents from everyone?

The last time I read about such a phenomenon, it was a disgruntled employee who was directing pennies to his personal account. Roundling error is not enough for a large intitution to risk reputation. Stealing a penny is still stealing. However, it is enough to make a single person quite...

Max Keiser: Big Banks Allocate Losing Trades to Clients, Keep Winning Trades for Them

Actually, it IS quite a shocker :) The keyword is retroactively. As everyone, who listened to the recent "Goldman" enquiry, knows banks tend to offer depreciating positions in over-the counter (read "impossible-to-value") securities to more "naive" clients. What is not common knowledge...

Trading in the US for 3 months on a B2 visa?

Given you have talked to embassy staff (I presume you have a recording), you always have defence that you acted on the basis of professional advice. To put it simply, meeting customers is business, meeting business partners (like the brokerage blokes) is business. TRading is very difficult to...

    chocolate bond issue

Unfortunately, the company is privately held. If you think about it, chocolate bonds is a smart idea. Not only the company gets a loan (from bondholders) at a good rate but they pay out the loan with their own produce including retail mark-up. A bond issuer can't go wrong with that.

Any pointers about backtesting high frequency strategies?

If the results seem "spurious" make sure you: 1) Assume execution on bid/ask and not next trade prices; 2) Take account of a delay in receiving market data and placing orders; 3) Subtract commissions. If you want to model whether you buy order is executed at the bid and sell order is...

Does Bloomberg or Reuters have good quality intraday data?

I don't think Bloomberg are offereing an equivalent of DataScope. However, Bloomber terminal provides a massive amount of current and historical "fundamental" data, which Reuters 3000 does not with a "basic" subscription.

Does Bloomberg or Reuters have good quality intraday data?

Mizhael, are you interested in historical or "live" prices?

Does Bloomberg or Reuters have good quality intraday data?

Both are good enough. Beware of "unfiltered" tick data though. (at leats, eliminate zero prices and zero volumes). Reuters is slightly faster.
