Take a close look at the quotes your broker uses to determine the unrealized P/L. They might use the ask for both long and short positions - those quotes might be delayed. Check real-time bid/ask quotes for a more accurate unrealized P/L.

Yes you could end up long or short 100 shares for each option contract. Solution: Close any ITM short options before expiry. If you do end up short or long stock just close the stock position. You might make or lose some money on the stock. No big deal.

The OP obviously is thinking of Credit Spreads. He doesn't know the correct terms so he is trying to express himself phonetically. Anyone experienced in option trading should be able to point him in the right direction.

My guess he would be referring to a credit spead - the long option would be "insurance" to cap the potential loss.
