1-2-1 fly. Since maximum profit is at the short strikes that's where you place the "body" of the fly. ATM options will have higher premium - but if you think the underlying is going to move $20 after you enter the position you would place the "body" $20 OTM.

In a nut shell No hedging required. The butterfly is a stand alone position. You must be good at estimating where a stock will end up on the date you would like to exit.

Atticus and his other ET aliases started lots of butterfly threads over the years - all your questions should be answered in those threads. PS ..... He even might answer this thread - I see he commented a few days ago on another thread.

1-2-1 flies are a good pre-earnings IV trade. Enter before earnings - exit after earnings. If you don't think the stock will move much after earnings a fly might be the way to trade it. Ideally you want the options to expire at the body strike. The debit to enter the trade is relatively low.

Brokers with low margin requirements on naked calls?

Part 2 of this thread is here: Broker that will allow writing covered calls on equity held elsewhere? The OP is interested in covered calls. The shares at one broker. The short calls at another broker. The dilemma is how to get both brokers on board.

    The calendar spread

The directional strangle/straddle option trader is 100% aware of what happens if he is wrong. He his prepared to lose all of the debit paid for the position - that is his stop. The collapse of IV after earnings is no mystery.
