True Legendary Trading Stories

The very first trade for the Schindler Fund was to go long the NQ's on the afternoon of September 10, 2001...ouch! Fortunately we came back during the remainder of the month to end down only 1.4%.

How many e-mini contracts do you trade?

We'll do 100+ NQ's at a time. ...but our holding period is measured in days, not minutes!

so you want to trade against me, huh?

Yes, trading is hard work, but it isn't hard work like some people think it is. Trading isn't like a job where you have to put in hours and hours day after day studying charts and formations. Trading is more like prospecting for oil -- a profitable strategy is like a productive oil well...

    someone should do this

In a similar vein, it would be interesting to see a contest where the goal was to lose money by trading. You'd have to limit the trading to once per 15 minutes (or hour or day) to prevent people from just using the spread to lose money, but with that restriction in place it would be...

    My first back test

If you used the June contract data you show the results for in developing your strategy, then you have to be concerned about curve fitting. If so, you should now take your strategy and test it on out of sample data and see if it still performs as well.

    Big time newbie question

You should ask your broker if you want to be sure exactly what they'll do. Different brokers have different risk control policies and procedures. But I would expect that if you enter an order and you don't have the available buying power for the order, your order will be automatically rejected.

    Getting Paid

Did you ever have an inkling that your deal was too good to be true? Why did they need you to move to Chicago? I think you should write a book. It sounds like an interesting story. Kind of like "The Firm".

    NQ below ES?

Congratulations to the 4 other people besides me who voted "no". Not only did the NQ not cross below the ES, but the spread (NQ over ES) actually widened a bit. I wonder if the Nasdaq will continue its outperformance. Did or does anyone trade the NQ/ES spread? I'd be interested to hear...

    Short Housing

Good point. I tried to take taxes into account by comparing mortgage rates to a muni bond fund which is tax free. But with mortgage interest deductible, the net rate isn't 5.5%, it is maybe (1-28%) x 5.5% = 3.96%. So now it looks like borrowing at 3.96% to keep your cash available for...

    auditing your returns

The Schindler Fund disclosure document template is the NFA publication "Disclosure Documents: A Guide for CPOs and CTAs". This publication won't be very useful for you if you are only trading equities. The partnership agreement and questionnaire don't have specific template sources. The...

    Short Housing

It sounds like you've already done the math, Dustin. How do you figure a mortgage is better than paying cash? Here's the way I figure it... 15 year fixed mortgage, no points is currently quoted at about 5.5%. Vanguard's Long Term Tax Exempt Fund is currently yielding 4.15%. You'd be...

    Trading as an entity

I'm considering a one person LLC so I can have a retirement plan. With a one person LLC is it possible to pick a salary amount such that I can put the entire amount into a tax advantaged retirement plan and not have to pay any social security tax on it? What kind of retirement plan would work...

How much should I be earning

Why do you think this? Are you trading illiquid securities that a large account would have inordinate slippage in trading? If you are trading liquid securities it is just as easy to take a position of 40 units as it is to take a position of 1 unit. In fact, I say you'll get a better return...

    auditing your returns

I don't know what Verisign thing you are talking about that is user friendly, but Netfirms is just for web hosting. If you use Netfirms you'll have to do your own web design with something like Frontpage or Dreamweaver offline. Then you just publish your web to Netfirms. I've been very...

I use netfirms.com -- just $5 per month as I recall. They are free if you don't mind a banner ad at the top of your pages. Baron told me to leave the link to schindlertrading.com out of my signature. You only get to put a link in your signature if you are a paying advertiser on EliteTrader.

    CPO banks

Assuming you are in the US... What was Citibank having a problem with? They open checking accounts for limited partnerships and LLC's all the time. It doesn't matter to them wheither your partnership or LLC is for investment purposes or manufacturing or whatever. Do you have an EIN...
