Smoothing price data prior to use as input?

The closing price is commonly used because that is the price which represents the end of a time period at which a trader can execute a trade. You cannot trade some average value of a price bar. So if you want to model what can be actually traded, you may do better sticking with the close.

Proposal for New Forum for Volatility Trading Instruments

OK, it's pretty obvious this idea has no traction. Over the last few days there has been more activity in the thread on trading Moon Cycles. Forget volatility, as if it had any relevance to trading o_O

Oil Rig Count and Predicting a Rebound

Here's a chart of the rig count (red line) vs. oil price (grey line). I don't see any predictive value in the rig count.

Ouch! SEC to put the crimp on leveraged ETFs.

Margins are already higher for leveraged ETPs, reducing the effective leverage to some extent.

Proposal for New Forum for Volatility Trading Instruments

The increasing popularity of trading VIX-related products, whether they are futures, options, or ETPs would seem to merit its own forum. It would be great if all these related threads were consolidated in one place. However, I'm not sure how it would fit in with the current format which has...

    SpreadProfessor Clients - Thanks !

Fully agree with your point that commercials have superior information on fundamentals, although their interest is probably more in hedging than speculating. Putting the energy market aside, do you think there is any futures market where the retail trader has a fighting chance to make good...

Has anyone traded the new DAX e-mini futures contract?

Thanks, Sig. I also found this hour-long video that walks through all the nuances of these transactions:

Has anyone traded the new DAX e-mini futures contract?

Has anyone traded these Eurex contracts using Interactive Brokers (IB) with a base currency of USD? Does it automatically perform the currency conversion between USD and Euros on entry & exit of the position?

Has anyone traded the new DAX e-mini futures contract?

Liquidity is most commonly associated with volume, but a more appropriate definition is the tightness of the bid-ask spread and depth of the market. On both of these counts, this young contract is looking good.

Has anyone traded the new DAX e-mini futures contract?

Eurex. Here's an update on activity: http://www.eurexchange.com/exchange-en/about-us/news/update-on-mini-dax--futures-18-days/2265680

Has anyone traded the new DAX e-mini futures contract?

It's only one-fifth the size of the big DAX contract. Looks like a good fit for smaller retail traders who hold overnight. Trades in Euros.

    The ACD Method

Years ago I swore that I would never try to pick tops or bottoms but current nat gas prices are sooo tempting!

How To Spot A Con Man

Interesting topic. The two tells I've noticed are: 1) they invoke references to religion and God, and 2) they emphasize how whatever they are selling will help your family and make you a better person.

Thinking about joining IB, question on odd lots.

The only restriction on odd lots I am aware of is when trading HOLDRS (a category of ETF's). This is not a broker restriction, it's a rule imposed by the issuer.

Thinking of going back to IB

I don't see why that would make a difference. You can do only so much to optimize trade execution when you don't have an exchange-support spread. If you setup your spread using IB's generic combo, you can set the order type to LMT+MKT where the difficult leg is executed first as a limit order...

Thinking of going back to IB

I can see the value of an autospreader for monitoring a large quantity of spread quotes. But for execution of a specific spread, it's a simple matter to setup & execute the spread using IB's generic combo. It sounds like you were previously on IB. Wasn't this sufficient for your needs?

    ICE Europe products in IB

I was imprecise. I should have said inter-market spread margins suck. Reference: http://www.elitetrader.com/et/index.php?threads/ice-euronext-and-eurex-futures-spread-margin-credits.282986/

    The ACD Method

I'll add that even if you don't trade using ACD, you will find many insightful posts on this thread about general concepts in trading. I am mostly a lurker and poke my nose in this thread a few times a year and I always leave a little wiser. It's also an upbeat thread and it's good to see...

IB – CL options delta discrepancies

Sometimes the variation in option Greeks is a result of different volatility inputs when the market has a pronounced skew in the option prices. Good options software will use the actual measured skew in the options price series. Not-so-good options software will simply apply a model to...
