Which one gives you the best bang for your buck?

I've subscribed to WSJ and Barron's in the past (not IBD). WSJ is good if you want to read some editorial pieces or in-depth articles after the events occurred (or sometimes they trigger the event -- but by the time you've finished reading it you've missed the event). Barron's seems to be a...

How do you keep up with the market news?

CNBC -- But mostly for the CEO Interviews, datapoints, and earnings announcements. Plus the occasional news news (CFO resigned, investigation started, M&A happening, etc.) Ignore the commentary. Reuters -- Filtered feed on Reuters per stock, then go through stocks of interest to see what...

Is watching Time and Sales useful at all?

I find it useful for the following reasons: 1) How active is the market 2) How close are the actual prices versus the mark price versus the bid/ask 3) To see why my bid is not being accepted (i.e, I bid 0.02 and it was 0.02 but just ticked up to 0.03 and only two other bids got accepted at 0.02...

This is how bad the IB Margin calculator and Support are

If I understand correctly, IB is worried about the worst-case scenario: 1) One leg is assigned early 2) The other leg is left open 3) You are not there to close it, you leave it alone 4) The market moves violently against your favour for the remaining leg 5) Since you are not there to exercise...

    Backup Broker to IB

I only do a dozen or so trades a weeks, so it's not a big deal to switch between trading platforms (especially if only 3-4 different platforms). And I would choose some of the brokers to be pure buy & hold (with little regular activity). The reason I would break up is so that I can keep 500k...

Should I move to Tradestation ?

I've used IB for over a decade. Their platform is very good for executing trades. It seems to be geared more towards long term investors (buy & hold positions), as well as options traders. It has support for quick action traders as well (although I do not do this). It is quite weak on the...

At what point do you start thinking to take some profit off the table?

I never 'take profit off the table'. If the company is no longer worth holding, I'll reduce my position. If I expect with strong conviction that a company is significantly overvalued (2x+), I'll reduce my position. If a position in my portfolio is more overweight than it should be, I'll reduce...

    Backup Broker to IB

I would be looking for a 'backup' broker for IB as well. Mainly to avoid having too much investments/cash in one brokerage in case something bad happened. Sadly I have yet to find one that offers what I need (low margin rates, low/no option assignment rates, otherwise low fees -- all of which...

Do you pay a fee when your option expires?

From my examinations, a lot of brokers charge an assignment fee (10-25$ is not uncommon). However, Interactive Brokers charges 0$. If you purchase a CALL option on XYZ @ 10$ and at expiration time the underlying is trading at 11$ you have two options: 1) Sell the CALL option back on the...

Looking for seasoned advice on where to begin - API programming

To be very fair tho: The biggest challenge is not going to be the language or picking up the language. The biggest challenge will be writing code *correctly* (so the right results are displayed, no hidden bugs that give wrong information or take too long to execute). That is why it would be...

    Interactive Brokers Interest/Margin Rates

There are multiple good uses for margin. Not just as a means of 'owning more' so you can make more. A very basic example is to be fully invested and want to take advantage of a sudden market move (severe over-reaction to an earnings report but you see something worthwhile to invest in): So you...

    Interactive Brokers Interest/Margin Rates

It is not uncommon for me to take 100k+ position on margin and hold for a month or more before liquidating or otherwise covering the position with cash. And I quite often do this so it would be expected for me to hold 100k+ on margin year round. So, long term margin rates are important to me :)

How much money do you need to actually move the prices?

I've purchased small cap stocks in large enough quantity with a single buy order that the spread between the fills was noticeable. And it took a few minutes to fill. I've purchased SPY ETF in large quantities that didn't have any effect on the price history. If you are talking large cap...

Looking for seasoned advice on where to begin - API programming

I think he said he is a non-programmer. In tat case, you do not want to pick up one of the mainstream languages (you'll be too overburdened with overhead). What you want is to find a platform that includes a built-in scripting language. Then use that scripting language. If you are okey with...

    Interactive Brokers Interest/Margin Rates

So the argument is that enough of the customer base is unaware of the benefits of lower interest rates that it is not a deciding factor for them. And those who are, will be going to IB? I guess one could make an argument that for "sophisticated" non-institutional investors, IB is the de-facto...

    Interactive Brokers Interest/Margin Rates

Which begs the questions: Why hasn't a competitor setup shop to offer rates that are close? a 2.0% to IB's 1.81% would be competitive enough, yet I have yet to see one. Generally market forces should have done something here :)

    Interactive Brokers Interest/Margin Rates

As an easy way to compare several: https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=1340 Let's go with the simple 200k amount: IB @ 1.81% TD @ 8.50% Option Xpress @ 7.00% (I know the higher the amount, the less it goes, but none of them seem to get within 2% of IB). Also pulled Lightspeed...

    Interactive Brokers Interest/Margin Rates

I notice that the Interest Rates on equity purchased on margin is very low. In fact, I am hard pressed to find anyone else who offers interest rates anywhere near what IB is offering. Am I missing something? Are there other brokers out there who do compete at this level? If not, then why...

Im sorry but please understand margin debt interest

I think a more simple example might help: You deposit 100,000 USD into your account. You purchase 100,000 USD of stock -- so far, no margin is used and no interest is paid. You purchase another 50,000 USD of stock -- you are now on margin: Margin (loaned amount) : 50,000 Interest Rate 8% PA...

    off-site research setup?

I think both AWS (Amazon) and Azure (MSFT) have what you are looking for. Not dirt cheap, but not expensive either. Mainly depends how much RAM/CPU you need. They have many different configurations, so its worth checking their websites to see what suits you.
