    Trend Followers Performance for 2008

Since the ET membership appears to consist of many more stock traders than futures traders, perhaps trend following money managers who trade stocks are of even greater interest. One example is the hedge fund group called Blackstar, whose performance you can look up in those expensive hedge fund...

The circular firing squad starting early

Another view is that ANY Republican was doomed to lose against ANY Democrat, because this presedential election was, is, and always has been a referendum on George W. Bush. A guaranteed loss for Republicans. The dems woulda won even if their ticket was Barney Frank(P) and Nancy Pelosi(VP)...

I just got turned down for a secured loan!

Perhaps you can find a way to express your opinions in the marketplace, by placing trades, taking risk, and (it is hoped) reaping rewards -- when the future unfolds in the way that you have bet. Good luck and happy trading!

To make a living you need at least 300k in your account?

Rather than $300K, why not put $3 million in an account and use the money to buy tax-free municipal bonds (0-3 years time to maturity) paying 3.25% interest? $100K per year income, tax free, very low risk, and zero stress. Not an awful predicament.

    "W" Movie

New York magazine's profile of the filmmaker, ends up relatively positive about the film http://nymag.com/movies/profiles/51160/ Hilariously, the official "review" of the picture appears in the same issue, is 1/10th as long, and negative.

So doesn't using "tight stops" necessitate

For those who seek diversification through trading multiple systems, you may find (as I have) that systems with "tight stops" have a surprisingly (and pleasantly) lack of correlation to systems with "loose stops". If you've got a system with "loose stops", adding another system with "tight...

How to play the 1 month?

You may find it significant, that T-Bill futures do not appear on the daily volume report. Their trading activity is so light that the exchange doesn't bother to tabulate it. Attached is Friday's volume report, have a look. URL = http://www.cme.com/ftp.wrap/daily_volume/?h=1

How much does a specific market matter?

Read the Bund, BOBL, Schatz threads here on ET. (These are interest rate futures traded on the EUREX exchange in Germany). Many traders, it seems, have focussed on these markets to the exclusion of all others, and have "learned the rhythm" of the way they trade. It seems these very...

Why never use dollar amount in risk management?

One place where "dollar amounts" are appropriate (in my opinion) is in screening out instruments whose volatility is too low. I apply this idea in fully mechanical trading systems, that trade portfolios containing hundreds of instruments. At some times, some instruments just plain move...

    Portfolio Software

I also use Trading Blox and I am also very happy with it. I'm pleased that I can feed it intraday data (I've become quite a fan of one minute bars), and that I can test a "Suite" of several different strategies, each strategy in the "Suite" trading a portfolio of many instruments. (The...

    sell your strategy

Meanwhile the "seller" has fully disclosed her intellectual propoerty. In effect, giving it to you for free. A dishonest firm (perhaps not YOU, but some other nefarious firm packed with Shady Characters) would always discover that their own tests confirm the system not to work. The "seller"...

Do you want a percentage of the losses too, or just a percentage of the winnings? It's a question buyers will probably ask.

    Futures for longterm trends

If you use a "spread order" to roll over, the "exit old" and the "enter new" transactions will occur at the same instant. For example, today happens to be the day I am rolling over my long term position in the index futures known as "CAC-40" (the French stock index futures), info HERE. I...

Continued freefall in commodity prices will make 2001 appear as a "walk in the park."

Wouldn't it be cool if there were a way to profit from falling commodity prices? Like, if you were able to short individual commodities, or short baskets/portfolios of commodities? Then this "freefall" would be a profitable event, and the faster the fall, the greater your profits. While other...

Trading futures in retirement account - potential huge problem?

I trade futures in an IRA at MF Global. I opened the account at "Millenium Trust Company" who serves as the Administrator. As I recall there were two or perhaps three companies that offered this service, I called each of them on the phone and asked questions. For some reason (can't remember)...

Democratic Majority + Severe Recession = End of your Trading Career

There are other ways to trade as a career, besides long-only equities. You could trade options (you know, those "puts" and "calls" things) which allow you to bet on, and profit from, DECLINES as well as advances. Even when it is difficult or impossible to short the underlying. You could...
