    Kirk Report 2008 Trading Performance?

Agree 100% w/the above sentiment about TKR and about hating interference in your trading patterns. It's his site .... he can run it as he thinks is best ... but he made it clear a year ago why he stopped posting his trades. I'm sure some folks got torked and quit the site - but I posit those...

    collars

Looking over the last year, I am happy that I collared some of my positions. IE - XYZ at 80 Sell the 90 call, buy the 70 put for maybe a .50 debit. XYZ goes to 70. Keep the call premium and collect 2 rounds of increasing dividends over a 6 month period. Was cheap insurance on my...

    collars

I think you're right -- but the catch is to try and ensure you still can come out either ahead or close to zero-cost through looking at the various strikss and timeframes going out a few months or more.

    collars

IMHO one of the best use of collars are to protect stock positions you own, either to lock in a profit or protect your initial investment. I've used this over the past year when I know upside is limited, downside is likely, but the company's dividend was safe. A collar allowed me to collect...

    Life without anti-virus ?

I use a Mac - no A/V needed. :) On the Windows images where I trade, however, I use F-Prot A/V. As a security geek, I must say it's been the most reliable and bug-free A/V I've encountered over my 15 years in the field.

Cnbc, Mindless Mush For The Sheeople

Ahhh I knew it was time for another CNBC thread. :) Yeah, CNBC is less business television and more business infotainment for the sheeple. From the Octabox (8 talking heads on-screen) to sensational sound effects and graphics to noise, shouting, desire for confontation, and the always...

ThinkAI tool by Think or Swim

It's only functional for real accounts over $25K today --- for all paid accounts on Monday. That said, I am running ThinkAI now on IBM and it looks to be working. EDIT: Does anyone know what kind of logic / variables they're using for this service, or is it a matter of "trust us and our...

ThinkAI tool by Think or Swim

I saw the demo yesterday. I'll watch it for a few days to see how it works and performs .... will be interesting to see, anyway. After all in this market most "predictions" other than "volatility" are taken by me with a grain of salt. Hope it's as great as ToS says it is, though. But...

    Washington DC Firm

I trade myself and never really gave thought to trading with/for anyone......but it's always nice to meet and know local traders in my area. So if you're new to DC, welcome!

    High volatility Strangles

I daresay Iron Condors will kill you in the current market --- at least in the crazy vol we saw this summer and fall. Unless you've got a high risk tolerance and stomach for big swings, I think it'd be hard if not impossible to run a good IC position these days unless you're making intraday, or...

    Sds

Frankly I think they're great for the little guy to hedge themselves ... SDS has been quite handy for me and I appreciate being able to responsibly use the leverage as a hedge in my equity portfolio. I daresay what kills them is that, as with all handy things, the "big guys" come in and it...

    Profitable trader trade-log. After years.

Any firm who REQUIRES a certain GPA and then is unwilling to bend if they find someone who meets or exceeds their other criteria is not worth working for, since that reflects a closed mind and inflexible work philosophy. That tells me they want unconventional talent but go about looking for it...

    PA and Screen Time

Thanks. :) ve not kept a written journal per se. There were/are times when I'll print out charts, study them (and my "trades") to see what I could see....especially if/when I stray from my trading style and lose. I might reflect on good trades briefly but will scrutinize the s--t out of...

    PA and Screen Time

I agree. Takes a long time but after a while the price action sort of "talks" to you and you find yourself relying less and less on zillions of indicators. Screen time - either paper trading or just watching the chart and going "hrmmm i'd go short about THERE" or "this looks tempting but...

    Characteristics of a Successful Trader

VERY VERY good thread, Eric. Couldn't agree more with many of your posts, including this one: Winning and losing is not just fun for these people, it's personal. They choose not to trade, when the alternative is losing. And even consistently successful traders realize that there are times...

I will stop being a trader, to become a value investor

Agree 100% - and the best thing you can do is do your own homework and ignore pretty much everything any 'analyst' says about a company or sector from Wall Street (with a few exceptions, though.) Sure, their comments may move markets but that's the herd and beholden mutual funds moving in...

    trading fees?

I trade futures mostly (via a futures broker) but recently moved my stock trading/options account to ThinkorSwim from a full-service firm to begin building my long-term retirement portfolio. FWIW saying, when I swing-trade stocks at ToS I am happy to use their .015/share pricing ($5 minimum)...

    trading fees?

What are you daytrading, for starters? Sounds like stocks. So if you're moving large share blocks of stock you should look at per-share pricing from firms specializing in daytrading. Doing it through E-Trade or Schwab likely won't give you the execution speed or pricing you need to succeed...
