Techniques for Managing a Random Entry

    Gordon - I think I have an explanation... Aphie touched on this...he used 3 possibilities, but they were not all equally likely to happen. The following 4 possibilities are equally as likely to happen as explained below. A: 50 --> 49 --> 48 = -1.5 B: 50 --> 51 --> 48 = -1.5 C: 50 -->...

    NQ lost fans?

I think the biggest reason is LIQUIDITY...give the YM some time and liquidity should be fine. However, keep in mind that the low YM commissions are temporary.

Should a novice play the ES or NQ?

I'd suggest starting with the NQ also. The multiplier of the ES is 50 while the NQ's multiplier is 20. This means that for every point of profit/loss you have on the ES, you need to have 2.5 points of P/L on the NQ to match that. So if you assume that both contracts move together more or...

anyone else getting hokey SPX or NDX futures quotes from IB lately?

I've had no problems...the quotes may lag a bit at times but no problems like you describe.

ask/bid change but the last price doesn't

IB's market depth feature seems good enough for me at least. I have been using it for a few days now and I think it has real potential to improve my trading.

Limit versus Market Orders for Eminis

IB simulates GLOBEX market orders as limit orders, so your market order is actually routed to the exchange as a marketable limit order through IB's servers. I don't use market orders for that reason- not GLOBEX native, but more importantly because I want to know what price I'm going to get...

SCALPERS: Criteria for cutting losses / profit-taking

I see what you are saying, we are not arguing about the same point then. What you call scalper refers to both momentum and bid/ask. What I call scalpers is the guy that tries to buy at the bid and sell at the offering, the bid/ask scalper. The bid/ask scalper doesn't need the stock to move at...

SCALPERS: Criteria for cutting losses / profit-taking

Capturing a move means following a trend ie. momentum. Scalpers don't buy and hope the stock will "move"! They buy and sell trying to profit from playing the bid-ask spread. They do not need the stock to "move" necessarily. I suggest that instead of insulting others and making yourself look...

Globex is back up...I guess there was no conspiracy after all. :p

SCALPERS: Criteria for cutting losses / profit-taking

How do you considered this to be scalping? When you look at the spoos to see where the price is going to go...isn't this by definition momentum trading and not true scalping? It's amazing that you have all this money to throw around but you have no idea what you're saying! Somebody please...

    QQQ execution times

I used to trade the Q's before ISLD stopped quoting, now I only trade the NQ's. Liquidity is great, and transactions costs are about a third less than the Q's on IB. So how come everyone's making a big fuss over the Q's? Why don't you just move to the NQ?

What are the differences between an investor and a trader?

Traders execute the orders, investor are the beneficiary and sustain the profits or losses. I think most people here wear both hats.

    PDT question ...

Aphex: I agree with you that this is just BS on the part of the SEC. It's absolutely ridiculous. Anyways, maybe single stock futures are the answer to this...well, ahhh unless the SEC comes up with another brilliant idea to apply the PDT to futures also! :(

    S&P data

I am working on building an S&P trading model with an emphasis on risk optimization and quantitative pattern recognition. The general idea is to use price/volume factors based on historical backtests to increase the probability of making a profitable trade. Of course this is much easier said...

Trading is a zero sum game

Without considering the bid/ask spreads and commissions, the stock market is absolutely NOT a zero-sum game. Consider the following situation. A company issues 1000 shares at a price of $100 and 100 people each buy 10 shares. Suddenly the company says "Haha...we don't have any revenue" and...

    Inverted Market

I've started trading recently and I'm learning how the markets work. One thing I don't understand is how the BID can ever be equal to the ASK or be higher than the ASK...I mean wouldn't that mean there are people willing to buy the stock at a higher price than people are willing to sell it, and...
