Anybody use software like OptionVue or any of its competitors? I would like to see some reviews. Thanks.

What is the Best On-Line Discount Broker for Options?

I wrote him, asking why he didn't include Interactive Brokers among the best for Options. "While their rates are low, I have had a few messages about lousy executions, and last I knew, they did not allow option spreads in an IRA, which most of my subscribers seem to want. Thanks for your...

What is the Best On-Line Discount Broker for Options?

I gather that IB is the winner in the price per contract department. Optionsxpress and ThnkorSwim have analytic software so you can do delta analysis and other such things on your portfolio. Does anyone know if you can use the IB programming interface to give a 3rd party options program...

    Implementing Fundamental Analysis Strategies

I've used various criteria. One that seems to work better than others is: P/E < Earnings Growth Rate = Undervalued. P/E >>> Earning Growth Rate = Overvalued. I've tried both using trailing and forward looking numbers and am not sure which is better. Now back to my original question...

    Implementing Fundamental Analysis Strategies

One way to try to use fundamental analysis in stock buying to built up a portfolio of long positions in undervalued stocks and short positions in overvalued stocks. It is very hard to get this to work because, even though reversion to the mean eventually happens, it is very hard to predict...

    Datek Trailing Stops

Have the the GTC variety been working? I was told by one of the people who answer the phone, that, right now, they are reset every night. Thus if you have a 7% trailing stop on a long position and that position goes down only 5% every day, the stop will never be triggered. I think they...

    Exponential Moving Average

Darkhorse, I believe that you made an "intuitive and empirical observation" that your car is useful to you. I believe you made up a fantasy, which you can't justify in any way, that EMAs are more useful to you than SMAs. There is no doubt in my mind that your car has served you better than the...

    Exponential Moving Average

While I like tom-p's explanation of why the 2/(n+1) smoothing constant was adopted, I should point out that the underlying assumption of iid is pretty silly. Just look at the Bollinger Bands for any ticker and you will see that the variance really does vary.

    Exponential Moving Average

Vikana, the EMA of a linear series isn't linear. The Lag is not constant. I don't know what you are talking about or trying to show. Why not make believe you are back in school and writing out a precise argument?

    Exponential Moving Average

Thank you Tom, that was a good post. :) . I've seen the definition of EMA you give: n-day EMA = (1/n x new settle price) + [(1-1/n) x yest EMA)], in Welles Wilder's book, published in the late 70s. That definition, using a = 1/n, seems to have more to do with n days than the a = 2/(n+1) that...

    Exponential Moving Average

"Robert, I gave you the answer already." ROTFL. The posts that have appeared in the thread make me wonder if anything on this site is worth reading. I've written to 8 well known authors on technical analysis. Six have replied and said that they don't have the foggiest as to what an N day...

    Exponential Moving Average

It seems that everyone is having fun on this thread but the originator. I am as much in the dark about what a 20 day ESA has to do with 20 days as I was at the start. I am coming to the conclusion that 99.999% of the people who proudly use EMAs don't understand them and shouldn't use them or...

    Exponential Moving Average

Thanks, Vikana. maybe we are making progress. First of all, is the general definition of Lag, Time Series[n] - Moving Average[n]? If so, it is clear that the Lag, in general isn't constant. Now I agree with the part that says for the SMA of a linear series with slope 1, Lag = (n -1)/2...

I didn't see any definition of lag or smoothness. Do you have another reference that explains the basics?

I'll be waiting with baited breath Vikana. I would very much like to understand how a moving average is "behind" the time series.:)

    Exponential Moving Average

I think a psychologist would have a field day, observing some of the ridiculous comments here from people who are probably compensating for their poor performance in the stock market by trying to impress their fellow traders by bluffing that they have some scientific understanding of what they...

Vikana, please explain what "lag" means and the proof of your assertion. Thanks.

    Exponential Moving Average

Interesting reference Dbottom, but he doesn't give the formula we are used to. Here is a quote: "If we were sampling the data at 20 times/second (h = 0.05) then the value of N is (0.8/0.05) = 16 and a = (16/17) = 0.9412". The a is 1/100 of the percentage of the stock chart EMA. If you...
