    Do I need Margin?

If you don't want to use margin, you need cash. Buying 100 shares at $5 will require $500 in cash or equivalent margin. But, the others are right, just sell the call if coming up with the cash is a problem.

    floor squawk box?

Anyone found a good pit (bonds and/or S&P 500) squawk box? I've tried: TradeTheNews - their S&P guys are pretty good, good quality audio, you can hear the pit in the background well. Only problem is that around 1pm, these guys are wiped out and start.. well... relaxing. That wouldn't be so...

Options Traders, do you find backtesting pointless?

Possibly a more interesting backtesting scenario is to refine option models to better fit the actual data. For example, there's a clear inverse correlation between IV on the S&P and the futures price. Creating a more accurate pricing model would seem valuable. On the other hand, I've seen...

Options Traders, do you find backtesting pointless?

Supposedly OptionVue can do backtesting, but I tried the demo for a while and didn't have much luck. I've seen systems based entirely on volatility. For example, there was a system in TASC magazine a while back (maybe it was ActiveTrader?) which would sell premium if the IV exceeded a moving...

    Option Order Book?

You're not quite seeing what you think you are. In Level II, you're seeing the open orders at different levels on all exchanges. What you're seeing with options is the best quotes from regional exchanges. So, say you see 10 bid at .10 20 bid at .20 CBOE may be on the "inside bid" at .20...

    Iqfeed with Neoticker Feedback

One uses the Motif look-and-feel and the other uses Windows XP? I don't understand why the source of eSignal or DTN's data from CME would change the Look & Feel of the application?

    Danno's futures-options blog

Instead of trending markets, you may want to look at markets which actually have appreciable options volume. My first post (at the bottom of the page) has some good statistics on just that issue: http://foption.blogspot.com OJ's volume is about my lower limit on futures options. Beyond...

    Is DTNIq down?

I don't use hypertrader, but I've been using DTN all day doing some post-close statistical analysis.

DTniq, is it comparable to Esignal? Better, worse, same

You can only query tick history, so I don't believe there's any way to reconstruct bid/ask changes that occured without actual trades. (Unless you built that capability yourself from realtime data, in which case you could use DTN to save off level II data if you wanted)

DTniq, is it comparable to Esignal? Better, worse, same

Perhaps they meant through the software package you had chosen? Or are you writing your own apps? That data was gotten through a history query. Here's the first tick of the day for IBM on 8/7/06: 8/7/06 9:30 - Trade 100 @ 75.63, bid 75.63, ask 75.64

DTniq, is it comparable to Esignal? Better, worse, same

    You're mistaken, bid and ask history is indeed available. The last 2 trades for IBM (gotten through DTN's history): 8/11/06 13:02 - 100 trade @ 75.41, bid 75.41, ask 75.42 8/11/06 13:02 - 400 trade @ 75.41, bid 75.40, ask 75.41

DTniq, is it comparable to Esignal? Better, worse, same

I admit I've not used eSignal, but I have been using IQfeed for about a year to trade both equity options and futures options. The only complaint about futures with IQfeed is their continuous contract support isn't quite there yet. If you're daytrading, this isn't a big deal (as you'll follow...

Hey Danno, Just looking at your portfolio performance, I'm confused. If you turned $3k into $234k in 2 years, why couldn't you live off that? :-)

    Open Outcry Futures Options broker?

I could use any recommendations for a discount open outcry futures options broker (CBOT ags, CME meats, NYBOT). I've already looked at the following: IB: Financials only (SPX, ED) Velocity: No futures options DT Futures: $7 each way "+ fees" RJ O'Brien: $7 each way I'm already paying...
