life after making mrkts on the floor

I agree with your comment about ego, Don. I'm very humble - I KNOW I don't know anything about equities from the screen. But, each day in front of the screeen, watching prices, bids and offers, and prints, I learn a little something new. My hope, though this has not been shown yet to be...

life after making mrkts on the floor

I traded ag futures on the floor, now transitioning into equities from the screen. Still pretty new at equities - learning all the new terminology and navigating the computer functions and order placment methods is proving to be a bit of a steep learning curve right now. I keep trying to...

Trading an Options Book and Stock Tape Reading

Linda, Perhaps you'd like to read this thread: http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56373&highlight=tape+reading I think there's a bit more to tape reading than you indicate, and gambling is not a good analogy. Maverick74 has particularly good insights.

Paul Rotter and the Order book

In an article, Paul Rotter (aka the Flipper) mentions that if one wants to become a good trader, they need to "spend a lot of time watching the order book." Forgive my ignorance, but what is this order book? How can one watch this? Thanks for any help!

Trading an Options Book and Stock Tape Reading

If everyone will forgive some dumb questions: What is meant by the phrase "learning to trade an options book?" And, for those of you such as Maverick74, who've made the transition from Tape Reading listed stocks to trading options, do you feel your tape reading skills were an asset in...

    trading legends I have met

Worked for the educational division of Tony Saliba's firm in '94, and did some trade shows for the firm, so saw and talked to Tony. Tom Baldwin's girlfriend was there doing some bond trading classes for European and Mexican bankers. Knew a guy named Bill Greenspan who used to run something...

POLL: Do you spend "too much" time on ET?

Less and less time spent here, with every passing day. Being trained by two absolutely superb professional mentors has made ET primarily (marginal) entertainment at this point.

    Trader Daily and phone solicitations?

Ok, so the only thing I've signed up for in years is Trader Daily magazine. Thought this might be amusing and entertaining, not educational. Now over the last few weeks, all after this sign-up, I've gotten phone solicitations from at least three different firms trying to sell me trading...

    Stock Market Rigged - Official!

A fucking moron buys a penny stock, talks his equally moronic buddy into buying this same penny stock. The dumb buddy, with NO research whatsoever, buys on this "hot tip," and then bitches when it ACTS like a penny stock - perfect! Was the stock "manipulated?" He probably got that part...

    Tax and accounting forum

How about a Tax and Accounting forum? Seems like many here on ET trade frequently and short-term enough to qualify for Trader status as far as U.S. taxes go. It would also be interesting to know how trader's income is treated in Europe and Asia (among others) in order to allow for...

Trader status for U.S. and offshore taxes

Just curious as to how many claim Trader status for U.S. taxes? This includes filing schedules C and D, and the 475 (I think I've got these right...). In the mid-late 90's, I and many others on the floor did this. I've been away from trading for awhile, but am returning, so am trying to...

    Ban for stupidity?

Under this heading of banning for stupidity would certainly have to come the "contibutions" of that rasict cracker Thomas Jackson. His "everyone should own one" comment was right out of the early nineteenth century, and he's managed to follow it up with another mindless, tribalism classic.

Let me be the first to volunteer

Ok, I've had my fill of the spamming! Let me be the first to volunteer to screen new member's first dozen or so posts before letting them go into the forums. Some clown named "lil'rich" has just spammed the "Bloomberg or CNBC" thread.

    Getting started.

Due to a fair amount of randomness, luck can play a sizable role in trading. Add Nassim Taleb to your reading list.

    Paradox?

Raystonn, A truly coherent reply - well said! The only other thing I'd add is that games (roulette, blackjack, poker, etc) take place in a finite universe (52 cards only in the deck, etc.) which makes the odds calculable. THe market does not represent a finite universe.
