Extremely simple strategies with > 100% annual return

+1 If you test any MA crossover strategy, you might find that on net, the trending gains are wiped out by the ranging losses. Then you pay spread & comms. And .. any oscillator based strategy has the ranging gains wiped out by the trending losses. Then you pay spread & comms. If you...

    backtesting and need help

It's clear that I suggested testing it to rule it out, right? :p There are far to many TA believers out there, laying wishes on simple useless colorful indicators, without testing them at all.

    backtesting and need help

No need to over complicate things :) It could be as easy as plotting out suggested entries and exits from a simple moving average, then adding up the score. Some things are easy to rule out as useless.

    backtesting and need help

Backtesting a strategy is not about belief. It's about objectively and efficiently ruling out unprofitable ideas in a rational, evidence based way. Nothing about this is easy, and most if not all profitable traders actually are logical, and arithmetically quick thinking people. If they're not...

Has anybody ever had a consistently profitable algorithm automated?

At risk of attracting the TA police .. I saw similar results in my own indicator backtesting a number of years ago. Nothing useful in the TA world in my view. Just pretty charts that captivate morons & uninformed "investors". Single instrument historical price is not particularly useful...

Scam rule #1: Promote belief & shun evidence. ... How about today's blotter? It's just 1 more print-screen.

    The Perfect Prop Firm

Agreed, but would add that it's useful to know the odds, as well as the skills that help when working for a prop firm, or a bank. There seems to be a perception "here" that the best algorithm / strategy wins. There's a lot more to it than that. A trading desk can bring out the best and worst...

    The Perfect Prop Firm

Amusingly, many algo guys fail the personal compensation trade. Got the brains to build it, but not the tenacity to attribute the upside P&L to themselves. Fail the internal sale, and suddenly, you're a cost. Taller louder and wittier wins the day -- not necessarily smarter, wherever you sit.

    The Perfect Prop Firm

Hate to say it, but here's another reason why some should stay away from prop firms. Gotta have a real thick skin, and learn to enjoy the two way derogatory banter.. Same bs & similar characters on any floor anywhere in the world. Not such a fun ride for academic types, or fragile egos.

2c: This is the difference between a computer programmer and a trader. Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with being one or the other. Just different.

    The Perfect Prop Firm

True that. Illustrates one big difference in attitude between prop shop traders and prop traders in banks. To one group, everything's a trade. To the other, trading's a job with potential upside.
