The OP is wondering if option traders also trade the underlying. He notices that about 95% of option trades are buying and selling the options - no trading of the underlying at all. That is correct - most option traders have no intention of trading the underlying and there is no benefit to do so.

I like to buy calls before earnings. I am always bullish so I buy calls.

Just buy the call. Too much margin required for the put. And you only collect peanuts, not worth the risk.

Totally different situation than the Schwab incident. That was the lenders money.
