My NextGen Algo Setup - aka The Do Over

I guess I'm getting sold more on them ;) Since I'm new to either - which one requires the smallest footprint (I'd like to avoid another server and run the management part on my MAC) and which one is free or lowest cost ?

My NextGen Algo Setup - aka The Do Over

First of all thanks to both of you - that's the type of interaction I was hoping for. Now specifically to share some of my experiences. I wasn't aware that you could get physical servers for that little money - that's great input. Some of the providers are outside of the US - I'm a little...

My NextGen Algo Setup - aka The Do Over

I'm not overly worried of VPS versus physical - I think if you have a bad provider you're screwed either way. It's just as easy for them to get the drives out of your physical box as it is for them to mess with a VPS. Hence step 1 - change your password and step XXX (not sure where that'll land)...

My NextGen Algo Setup - aka The Do Over

Well - the server is up and running and I can log in. Step 1 - change my password - done. Step 2 - check what's running/listening on it before investing much time - looks like it's missing some libraries - installed netstat (yum install net-tools) Step 3 - change ssh to non standard port...

My NextGen Algo Setup - aka The Do Over

I've been algo trading for about 10 years now - from some super basic setups initially (single computer at home) to cloud based strategies to hybrid models where I backtest at home but deploy the code in the cloud to using AWS lambda. Over this time this has resulted in spaghetti code (having...

    Option trader tax status

Steven - what records do you keep that you can't get from your broker statements? (I'm mostly asking cause I don't keep track of any of this outside of performance analysis) Can't you just download your activity from there in case you get audited?

Karen the Supertrader - TastyTrade Hybrid Experiment

I'm not a Karen fanboy but this article seems quite motivated to push their own stuff without serious substance on the backtest and some pretty wild assumptions. Seems like a coin flip on who did the worse research.

    Backtesting and automated trading.

Yes to both - I have many strategies backtested (most of them didn't work out) and for that I use my own backtesting framework. Many use specific entry patterns or indicators and no charts at all - only a few use charts and for those I use jfreecharts. The idea in most of my backtesting is that...

    Backtesting and automated trading.

Obviously do whatever you're most comfortable with unless you want to pick up a new language in the process- IB has a great java API. You can use it to download quotes, execute trades - do backtesting - there's a ton of technical indicator libraries like http://ta-lib.org/. I do most of my stuff...

    Closing short options

Maybe still depends on your trading platform/broker. I used to trade with optionsXpress more than 10 years ago and back then they had weird situations where you bought to open or bought to close and you could have the same contract twice in your account - once short once long - then you paid...

Trading is a way of earning or hobby?

Where do you get these statistics and what do they even mean? 99% never have a winning year - never make money overall - never make money consistently ... I think that's BS - just like the post above yours - you won't find a mathematician who will acknowledge that statement to be a fact either...

    tastyworks announces fee structure

Tried it just now - GLD is available to borrow - that's for sure. Having said that I'm sure their available shares are nothing compared to IB. Even at TOS I've had issues with shares on super liquid etfs like TBT, TLT and sometimes got a call that they had to buy them back.

U.S. tech leaders sound alarm over Trump immigration ban

There's the people who watch fox news and the ones that don't. I'm sure you've great imagination - but I don't know what you mean by locals from Europe - seems like an alternative fact to me. Do you mean you don't actually hire them from Europe - they just happen to have European heritage (like...

U.S. tech leaders sound alarm over Trump immigration ban

You mean European's or Europeans? How do you think the Europeans get into a startup if not on a H1B?

U.S. tech leaders sound alarm over Trump immigration ban

I don't think there are any left. labor cost doesn't matter compared to skill set for tech companies - it is really hard to find skilled labor. If you are not able to get a job in the us tech industry these days you do have nothing to offer and should probably look for a different career.

    Redditor yoloing on AAPL

Wow - quite the read - pretty long but the misery keeps one going. I hope he kills it on the trade. Having said that he seems like a hard core gambler - why else would you put the trade on that long before the actual earnings (with a weekend in between) and not just the day before. roulette's...
