Volume and price movement. If your going for big moves, i would say volume and high stock price. If your going for ticks, volume and low price. IMO you just cant beat volume.

How does the specialist 'work orders'? Do floor brokers say they want shares in a certain price range and the specialist matches up incoming larger orders with these off the floor orders or does this refer to someting else?

I would go where the style is best and the money is best. From what you have described im guessing you work at swift, and if you can get more money elsewhere with no experience, go for it. We all know what they think about you. (Providing my guess is correct)
