broke/ unemployed and out of options so i signed up for the military.

I'm 33 and I'm starting to think those guys I thought were blockheads joining the military at 18 are actually super geniuses. Having a pension at 38 can be a great wind at your back for future endeavors. It sounds like you are already signed up. So, I would focus on getting some red blooded...

    Anyone interview with Optiver?

Yeah I don't think you get all supertraders that way but I think it works for them a couple of ways. How are they supposed to evaluate people except in this way? Selecting numbermonkeys exclusively probably gives them a good pool and likely aids in social cohesion -- I mean can you imagine the...

Is it feasible to design an algorithm to beat VWAP in 2 min?

If you want to buy and get better than VWAP in two minutes, here's what you do: - Buy some shares at the beginning - If it goes up, congratulations, you have beaten VWAP for the period - if it goes down, buy some more (repeat this step) :)

    Tradelink help

Tokyo - You can always get a bid from the guy who maintains/develops tradelink. To get more specific, your code needs to track a few things: When an order is submitted When an order is acknowledged When an order is canceled When a cancel is acknowledged When an order is filled...

    Algo trading study resources?

I second this. I flipped through the contents and some of the book and I noticed that she is just rehashing all the same theory but putting the words "high frequency" throughout. This article seems like a real joke and is also in her book: "How Profitable are High Frequency Trading...

My Moving Average automated trend following system, why is it that bad?

I use Amazon S3 with the Firefox S3 Organizer plugin. You pay very very small micro fees for data storage and data transfer. However, you get very fast speeds.

What prop firm is best for automated trading?

EchoPro is EchoTrade's rebrand of Sterling and has an API many use for automated trading. There is a connector for TradeLink that simplifies many of the mundane tasks of system testing and deployment: http://tradelink.googlecode.com/ I think some firm should be set up to cater to automated...

CFA: worth the time and money?

I have an MBA from one of the top 20. I took the first CFA test but didn't pass. I will try again when I have had more time to study for it. They structure the costs to encourage you to try and follow through once you've started. It's definitely a good program. I think the ordered list...

best way to hack up an rdbms to approximate something like kdb for poor/dumb people

I second the suggestions of using Cloud Computing. I use EC2 and it's great to be able to fire up an instance with my data loaded and 15 minutes later I can run a bunch of stuff, get results, and shut it down until I'm ready to test again. You can start with a "Large" instance which is the...

Best place to park cash for intermediate periods?

Redneck Bank, Where Bankin's Funner! http://www.redneckbank.com/ Not sure how much cash we're talking about but 2% MM up to 35k isn't bad. I think some people with lots of money just sniff out these kind of deals and park cash across several banks. Their debit cards are great especially...

Any Prop Blew Up on May 6th?

NQ when you look at folks who have had _huge_ winning years, they can usually attribute the majority of their success to a few wins where they took a big position and won. Same for big hedge fund managers in a larger timeframe, they have 1-2 big ideas every couple of years. I suggest doing...

    Job Offer at Title Trading

Sounds like bottom line is they only make money when you make money. That means there's a real motivation to make good traders. I'd jump at this kind of deal if I were just starting out in life. You can worry about payout percentage after you've been profitable for awhile.

Hey guys first thread! looking for a sim to check outut

I'm not naysaying but I think there is more to it than education and commitment. There are a lot of 'getting started' threads where people give the same advice over and over. I think the way to do it is to put your $50k in a trust that will give you $5k every six months or so to trade with.
