Newbie question about tech analysis and charts

That is the worst thing that could have happened to you. FWIW, initially you should focus on price and volume alone and stay away from indicators.

Is ATR a good way to measure volatility?

That is a given. Who would compare the volatility of GOOG and AMD without first calculating both in percentual terms? To the OP, the only hitch with ATR as I see it is that it is a indicator of past volatility. The stock may act more or less volatile in the future.

    ES-contracts in Euros

Interesting, thanks for the link. The only problem I see though is the currency risk exposure. Now that the dollar is strengthening vs the euro, wouldn't it be wise to trade the USD-denominated contract?

The BEST Indicator to tell whether an Option is OVERPRICED is...

I see. What you have just described I have always thought of as a synthetic underlying position (either long in the case of long calls and short puts; or short in the case of short calls and long puts). With all the automated trading nowdays, it seems like this kind of free lunch would be...

The BEST Indicator to tell whether an Option is OVERPRICED is...

A couple of rookie questions here: I am assuming your example for USO is regarding call options, therefore the 86's would be more OTM than the 85's. I get it you are talking about the skew that can be seen for options with less moneyness? But by that rule of thumb then, most OTM options will...

Indicators are liars! Support and Resistance Trading for the S&P emini

Hi ES, you seem to know what you are doing and I love the fact that you are keeping things simple and effective. However, why the "Paypal Donate" on your blog? You (should) be making a killing on these trades. Best, Chirag

    The skew part II

dmo, Let me try to understand and conceptualize where you are coming from. By deduction, the reverse of your example should also hold true: Assuming flat volatility curve (say 20% as per your example) for both calls and puts then - I could short puts, buy calls and short the underlying to...

Are naked puts really this safe????

The spot rate could always decline to a lower price where the initial cash you have held as margin is not enough.

What about this for a strategy?

I would suggest you look into vertical spreads. In your example, if you are bearish on the underlying, just buy a FOTM call to cap the risk on the trade. If the underlying ends up below the strike prices of both the options, you get to keep the balance credit (credit recieved from...

What about this for a strategy?

Yes. Its called naked call writing. You don't have to own the stock, just hold cash as margin in your account. What you are suggesting requires more commissions than what is basically a short call position. If you don't own the underlying, you may not know the price you will have to...

    The skew part II

dmo, I might be completely wrong here, but isn't the strategy you are describing commonly termed as gamma scalping or gamma trading? If not, what is the difference?

wouldn't you have to buy the futures contract as well?

what exactly does this firm offer?

It should be you who should have something to offer this firm (ie. proven track record). Otherwise, why would they bother hiring you?
