thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

I believe TOS is NOT multi-threaded, so one core.

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

Yeah, when I chatted with TOS, they said they have users running 8gb RAM systems, but they're running very few charts.

    4k monitors and scaling

Probably because you're using a 32" 4k monitor at 24" viewing distance, vs my using a 27" 4k monitor (same # of pixels, but each is smaller) at 28" viewing distance. That said, I'm not sure I'd be able to see easily using your setup. I just don't know what 27" 4k at 150% scaling translates to...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

I didn't try minimizing. I'll give that a try, but I'm guessing the extra chart windows, even when minimized, will slow down TOS. Yeah, that's certainly the impression I have as well. I'll have to get on the phone with TOS one of these days and see if I can get anymore particulars on their...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

Off the top of my head, probably close to 30 instruments charted simultaneously, plus a heat map, plus a watchlist window with many dozens of instruments, though only a couple dozen at most in one watchlist. Truth be told, some of those charts were just checked in the morning and then not...

    4k monitors and scaling

Bezel space hasn't been an issue as half the monitors have super thin bezels, and I've just gotten used to it. I do have a center monitor though. I never understood how people managed setups where looking straight ahead put their focus on the bezels of adjacent monitors - that would drive me...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

Ethernet connection, not wifi. Yeah, I could use 2 computers, but that becomes a logistical headache. And then I need more hardware to reduce the headaches and make switching between machines seamless. Probably easier, and certainly less expensive, to just adapt to fewer simultaneous charts.

    4k monitors and scaling

Even with several 24" monitors, I use DisplayFusion to manage screen real estate, so that wouldn't be an issue with larger 4k monitors.

    4k monitors and scaling

I recently picked up a used 27" 4k monitor for $50 - at that price, I had to buy it and wanted to see if it would integrate well with my 24" multi-monitor setup. My viewing distance is ~28". At 4k resolution w/o scaling, I can see the charts and make out the candlesticks, but forget about...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

Following up on this, I made a few changes: upgraded video card from Radeon R9 270 2gb vRAM to Radeon RX 480 8gb vRAM. Not much difference in TOS lag (again lag is in TOS only, not other apps) since I had to move to Win 10, it was easier/cheaper to buy a used Win 10 tower and sell my old tower...

    Futures trading approval - requirements?

I'm at TD Ameritrade, but I'd guess the requirements aren't dramatically different at other brokers. What are they looking for - funds in account, income, net worth, experience, stated risk profile? Which is most important? Do they run a credit check? Are they calling/writing to your employer...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

When I was using integrated AND discrete graphics, I was directly connecting 5 monitors to 5 ports. Once I gathered from this thread that using both dGPU and iGPU could cause problems, I disabled iGPU. But to get 5 monitors on the iGPU, I'm using a MST hub AND daisy chaining. Yes, the AMD R9...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

I'm using the latest graphics drivers. I went to update Java and got a message saying I hadn't updated Java in over 6 months, and it recommended I uninstall Java, which I did. TOS still works, so I assume TOS installs with its own installation of Java, which I'm sure it auto-updates.

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

Or from my perspective, why not? Up until this thread, I didn't realize that using both integrated and discrete graphics could be an issue. In the absence of any conflicts/issues, using both is the easiest/cheapest way to use multiple monitors. I was using IB's TWS that way without any obvious...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

Good idea, I'll try closing down some charts and see what GPU-Z shows. Yeah, network charts seemed odd, but checking speedtest.net, I'm getting 100Mbps download, which should be more than enough for streaming video and quotes.

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

OK, so with 4 monitors on the video card and integrated graphics disabled, I still have a bit of lag in TOS (e.g., in TOS chat windows, I can easily out-type the characters appearing on the screen, while I cannot do this in other apps). Here are a few snapshots of Windows Resource Monitor, Task...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

OK, didn't realize using both discrete and integrated graphics is a common source of problems. I did a little searching and found this: https://stockstotrade.com/setup-multi-monitor-pc/ So to test this out, I have 4 monitors connected to the AMD card and have disabled the integrated graphics...

thinkorswim laggy on my PC. Time for an upgrade?

All 5 are 1920x1080 running at 60Hz refresh. Edit: Actually, just went to check and one of the monitors (connected to integrated graphics) was at 59Hz. Weird. I changed it to 60Hz.

How many displays are you running, and are they all connected to the 1060 card or do you have some connected to the Intel integrated graphics?

Yes, Java. TOS has a memory allocation setting:
