Beginner With Strong Analytical Background - Where To Start?

If you're a strong developer, you might want to see if any existing traders need programming support. It might be worth somebody's time to help mentor you in exchange since strong developer resources don't come cheap. Otherwise I think this same question has been asked about 1000x already...

Just curious, what did you invest in to get a 757% return?

    A Novice Trader's Quest

Yeah agree with this sentiment. One of the TOUGHEST things about trading is the difficulty of measuring performance. You can be trading for a long time with a -EV strategy and not even know it. Without a feedback loop of knowing when you're doing something right or wrong, it's hard to refine...

Interested in trading GOPRO when options will be available?

FYI, GPRO has been shortable at IB since yesterday afternoon. (Luckily I shorted this pig. Might've covered too early today, but borrowing cost is 87.62% so not a position I'd want to risk holding too long).

Anyone else concerned by DirectEdge tagging orders as RETAIL?

I don't think this helps retail at all. I think retail orders are more susceptible to being "gamed" and incur higher adverse selection risk. I also think there are profitable strategies that actively trade against retail, as opposed to passive market-making. Anyway, I think this is a bad idea...

Anyone else concerned by DirectEdge tagging orders as RETAIL?

So DirectEdge submitted a proposal to start marking Retail orders as as Retail orders, which the SEC just approved: http://www.sec.gov/rules/sro/edgx/2014/34-72292.pdf From the proposal: "Identifying additional orders as Retail Orders may encourage Members who wish to execute against...

Using Katsuyama's IEX as a SMART router

I noticed that IEX has a new order-type geared towards retail orders: http://www.iextrading.com/insight/retailfaq/ RouteToRestAway - When aggressive, the order will behave like “RouteToTake” described above, but when passive, it will choose a single lit Reg NMS “protected” market...

When People Ask "What do you do for a living" What say you?

Yeah some of the answers here are just wacky. Produce porn? Jeez. I think the OP was making a good point though. Daytrader has a pretty bad connotation so for people who actually do this for a living, or even those who REALLY ARE trading from their parent's basement, there's probably been...

more or fewer technical traders than before

My impression is that most retail daytraders are technical traders - there's a lower barrier to entry, don't need to actually understand the companies, don't need any accounting knowledge, no need to have contacts in companies/in the industry, etc. In other words, it's a MUCH easier sell for a...

Do you know ANY successful traders? If not, don't you think there's a reason why that is? :)

    Continue or Bin it?

Why do you think you ONLY have charts? Personally, I'm in the camp that thinks charts-only won't cut it. With the time you spend staring at charts, you could be studying the impact of news flow, get familiar with company fundamentals, etc. As for charts, I think they're useful as well, but for...

When People Ask "What do you do for a living" What say you?

When I meet new people and get asked, I do say I trade stocks for a living, but I make it a point to mention the number of years I've been doing it. I don't think I come across as unemployable, so I assume they'd rule out that I'm making an excuse for being in-between jobs or something. My...

    Beginner here, need some advice

Really open-ended question. It depends on so much. I guess in general I would think the least amount possible where you'll still "care" would probably be a good amount. I think it's dangerous for you to assume you'll be break-even or profitable after a year, or even after ten years, so the...

Using Katsuyama's IEX as a SMART router

I tend to take liquidity, and don't do enough volume to get into the cheaper tiers, so I think the flat-rate works out better for me.

Using Katsuyama's IEX as a SMART router

Yes, that would've been the first place I looked. On my TWS, all I see are: ISLAND SMART ARCA BATS BEY BYX CHX DRCTEDGE EDGEA IBDARK IEX ISE ISLAND LAVA NSX PSX IBALGO CSFBALGO JEFFALGO The reason I thought I might need unbundled pricing is from...

Using Katsuyama's IEX as a SMART router

I use bundled pricing so I don't think I have SMART primary as an option. If that's not the case, I'm not sure how to enable it?

Using Katsuyama's IEX as a SMART router

I've been using IEX in lieu of IB Smart as well. I haven't taken any specific measurements, but I believe I do get better fills in some cases. I'm often trading enough size that I'm taking all displayed liquidity, and I believe with IEX I'm generally able to do this, whereas with IB Smart, some...

    Retail routing to IEX exchange

I think retail trades are impacted more than people think. If anything, it seems like there's even less oversight/regulation of retail orders than institutional orders. Just look at how much money Citadel is making after buying up all the retail order flow.
