Its hard to comment without seeing the error messages being returned by the API. I don't know how good your programmer is, but from the looks of the code, little to no error checking is being done. For example: StockTrading(f).PlaceOrder(MyOrder(f)) What is the return value from this...

I don't know where to get data going back to the 1800s, but a few places on the web offer free futures data back to the 70s. I can post the links if you are interested, or do a google search.

I use the market data CD from these guys: http://pitrading.com/intraday_ascii_data_market_edition.htm Its 1 min data (ASCII). Since most of my trading is done on 3 and 5 min, works great. For tick data, have to recommend www.tickdata.com

Best product for this is Wealth-lab. TS is a good platform once you have your systems working, but for general testing and experiments, Wealth-lab is the best.

I would avoid Metastock. You will quickly grow out of it. Look into TradeStation or try to pick up a used copy of TS 2000i.
