Postal Service Looks To Cut 40,000 Jobs

Almost 700,000 employees? Holy crap! I had no idea. Looking it up they are the 4th largest (by employees) "business" in the world. And oh yeah, if they can lay of 40,000 people with no change in service to the customer, what does that tell you?

Wall Street Won't Surrender on Bonuses

I am actually more pissed off at anyone who supported or voted for the bailout, and now is complaining about these bonuses. Many people opposed to the bailout raised the moral hazard issue, and no one listened.

Had to post this - Student loan fugitives

This is what is amazing to me. Thankfully we got the bailout so maybe people can start getting these types of student loans again.

    Bank withdrawals & Cash hoarding

It seems to me if we get to the point you would rather have gold than dollars, the game is pretty much up anyway. Someone else will have bigger guns and more of them.

    Lehman's Fuld Testifies

I am suprised by Fuld - he just doesn't seem that impressive at all. How did he rise to CEO? Or is this just an act for Congress?

Manhattan real estate prices headed downward

They actually had the CEO of a Manhattan real estate company on TV *today* who said everything is great, we are immune, and that prices were actually rising.

Federal funds rate jumps to 7 %

My knee-jerk reaction is how can you have a good, sound, long term viable business if you depend on cheap easy credit to do things like operate on a day-to-day basis or meet payroll? My father, brother and I all own small businesses, and the thought of running a business this way is a complete...

    450 pages now?

The bill the Senate is voting on contains a $45 tax credit for buying an energy efficient dishwasher. Seriously.

12 members who might switch their vote

To be honest, a lot of these guys voted no for the wrong reasons, and once they get theiir little pet additions to bring them into the fold, the bill will actually be worse.

Federal funds rate jumps to 7 %

Neodude, thanks for your posts in this thread. I just wanted to ask your thoughts on something. My wife really hasn't followed much of this at all. She heard someone give a rundown of the problem. Her synopsis was this: Banks made a bunch of crappy loans, didn't get paid back and now...

Federal funds rate jumps to 7 %

I do find it interesting that the idea of cutting government in other areas to help finance this rescue has never even been mentioned. It's like the idea is so preposterous that that no one has even considered it.

    Obama doing a smart thing----

I don't even think 250,000 is enough. Maybe 1 million. 250,000 says "we aren't really that confident in the banks either".

The Votes Are Not There For Bailout

Now they are all patting themselves on the back about what heroes those voting for the bill are.

    Economic Recovery?

It's almost impossible to know what to believe anymore. Here is what I can gather from a consumer credit perspective. If the bailout does not pass: To get a 30 year fixed mortgage, you will have to have good credit and put down 20%. The horror. Jumbo loans will be hard to get. (of...

    $25 billion for automakers, passed

Isn't the government forcing the auto companies to make cars that their customers don't really want and certainly don't want to pay for? Seems they should get something for that.

Treasury conference call, Sunday Sept 28

It sure seems like all the additions are basically window dressing to get the taxpayer to feel better about this bill. The executive compensation caps are pretty weak, help for homeowners seems to consist of "make sure they know about HOPE", and the number and price of warrants are completely...

    B. Frank - Bailout WILL be finished before Asia opens

Democrats are gaining huge political leverage over the Republicans by voting for this. Combine this with their desire to smooth over things with pissed off voters, they will do what politicians do - give them free stuff. I fully expect a $700 billion Main Street rescue package at some point...
