I need advice from the ground up on platform and broker set up. Pls help

I would agree with the gentleman who stated you should SIM TRADE for several months at this point. With $1k to trade you might not make significant gains, so work on a simulator for a few months. The answers for you will become clear in time. Best of luck

Is trusting your gut more important than following your plan?

I would submit that ultimately following your plan or system is paramount to success. HOWEVER, a good system should incorporate the more definable characterists of your 'gut instinct.' In other words, many times your 'gut' may tell you to buy or sell, but really it's your mind...

Are people looking at your stops?

There are stop-hunters out there but they're not after you, per se. They are trying to trigger the big block orders of 500+ lots. You might just be in the wrong place, wrong time. Maybe you should trade a two lot and stagger orders.

Prop firms charge way too damn much

Orange: See if your strategies are workable with futures contracts. Considering the leverage, the transaction costs could be much lower, in my experience. GL!

why Price Support and resistance is hardly random?

Supports & Resistances are the CITADELS of the Bulls & Bears. The Bulls field an army near support and the Bears station their troops near Resistance. These armies are always trying to breach each others' defenses. These levels may often be found with straight lines. When S breaks it may...

Getting a trading job with a criminal record - possible?

You should seek a position in the Obama administration. You'll fit right in. :) EDIT: But on the rizzie, it may or may not deter potential employers. Good luck to you in your search. I think it would be important how personable you are and how many mitigating circumstances exist (i.e...

    the Managed Futures mirage

I would never share a penny of my Incentive Fees with a broker. They are mine and mine alone. Of course, I charge no management fees and feel comfortable eating only what I kill in battle. To answer Promethesus' question, I think some brokers would be interested in recommending a good CTA...

    If you were recruiting traders...

Philosophy is the "set of the sail," my friend. I would inquire as the trader's beliefs about trading and their particular approach; its strengths and limitations. I would look for a trader that has a tremendous respect for risk. Nothing beats playing exceptional defense, IMHO.

1 min. ago on Fox News, Rep. Kanjorski said Dow will be down 2,000 if FinReg fails.

The mistake was putting on Fox News in the first place. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Whatever you do in your life, always remember this: GOVERNMENT is the PROBLEM; it is not the solution. You think this country needs even more laws on the...

    the Managed Futures mirage

I set up my CTA with a 33.3% Incentive Fee and NO Management fees, or commission rebates. When connecting with another human being and explaining to them how your interests are TOTALLY ALIGNED, it's a very good feeling and elicits good responses, in my opinion. But YES, 2 / 20 is still the...

    the Managed Futures mirage

Prometheus, I could write a novel on what I've seen in the brokerage industry. The upshot is that after working in the industry I've become the staunchest believer in MANAGED FUTURES because most investors are professionals or retirees of sorts, and often lack the time commitment, requisite...

    the Managed Futures mirage

OP: This is an interesting thread you have created. As an 'emerging' CTA I thought I'd share my insights on the matter. Firstly, I would generally disagree that managed futures is a 'mirage' of sorts. From a universe of approximately 1,750 CTAs I suppose it's fair to state that an...

Get ready for $11 a pack cigarettes

Good job, NYC! Smoking (cigarettes) has NO BENEFIT and costs society billions in health claims. Plus it smells terrible. ---------------------------------------------- I'd like to see a new SIN TAX (probably the only tax I'll ever favor) on MEAT of all kinds: Chicken, beef, duck, pork...

Too bad we can't communicate with Sperm Whales

Criminals at BP won't dynamite the well shut because they want to harvest their precious crop. ENORMOUS find; one of the largest ever. They could dynamite it shut (most likely; no nuke needed) but won't. And unfortunately our COWARDLY president doesn't have the balls to declare the US...

    Bloomberg.com new layout WTF?

+1 The new layout is AWFUL. I like my news concise and dense, so I can read through articles faster. I'm calling these jabonies before I leave the office tomorrow.

    Jobs bill blocked!!!!!

It's DAMN hard to be a fund manager. If you try to increase, marginally, the income tax on the highest earners, typical Democrat behavior, no surprise there. But taking from the successful to give to those who haven't HAD A JOB IN TWO YEARS?! Give me a break. People should get off...

Open E-Cry and Velocity Affected by Fictious Trades

No specific instance comes to mind, fortunately. Imagine OEC didn't have the $9mm cash to cover the loss. Since accounts are reconciled at the end of the day, the money may have been deducted from other client accounts at OEC. I disagree the CFTC is a "joke." I think the CFTC, in strong...

Open E-Cry and Velocity Affected by Fictious Trades

+1 You have to wonder what broker (clerk) was sitting there overnight and just WATCHING the tickets print massive number of deferred-month RUBLE futures. How do you NOT catch that?! I agree regarding the $500 day-trading margins, though this was not applicable here. You can lose your...

Gold bulls - think you are long gold?

Fixed-rate debt is an interesting part of beating (severe) inflation. Thanks for bringing that up. Ultimately, successful living is about CASH FLOW: How much is being paid out every month; how much is taken in. Positive balances should be at least partially invested in physical metal...
