I would say both better liquidity and spreads. however, options are a different ball game, opening possibilities to all kinds of strategies / scenarios - not the same for futures.

Forget the euro - you're better off observing relationship between yen/usd against us equities. That structure still holds true. today the carry trade unwinding went through the roof.
