tao, I appreciate your post. I must confess, though, other than garnering the notion of repetition in anything needed to succeed, I am fuzzy on what you're trying to say. The problem, as you even alluded to, is repetition done in the wrong fashion leads to extinction. When I speak of...

predicting volatility without direction for a profit? Guess it's kinda like a type of wagering in football, where you determine expected total points (between the two teams) instead of who wins or loses by the allotted point spread.

Your noting that random data gives patterns identical to actual trades is something I just read on the other evening, where charting the results of a random coin flip created patterns that many would assume had some rational meaning if it was applied to a stock. Gave me kinda a sinking feeling...

thanks, xtr, 'preciate it. Here's where confusion continues, though; I'll read comments from John on this page and think "you bet. That makes full sense." And it may well be true. But then coolweb comes in and cites the use of solely charts, and Zanger does the same thing. Is it that the...

your post reminded me of another thread, where someone else listed several edges. Starting to come back to me...maybe that's a sign of hope. ;)

acrary once said "there are lots of edges. Just don't expect to find them in the Open, High, Low Close data." He's a deservedly esteemed poster. I think I know what he meant, but yet it's hard to understand in some ways why that is. I mean, unless you go on a tick basis, wouldn't there be an...

optionpro, that sounds like mumbo-jumbo to some probably, but I actually think there's something to it. My uncle--fat as could be for much of his youth--lost a lot of weight at one point, even keeping it off for a year or so. Alas, he inevitably went back to the prior state, maybe even a bit...

Some fantastic replies, and most importantly, sincere. 'Preciate 'em. Hound Dog, yours was the only post some might consider negative, but I also am fine with your blunt approach. Sometimes that's the best. I'm sure you're correct in the way things are set up. I will reiterate that my...

thanks to all who have contributed. Made me think. Old Trader, what you describe is part of what got me enamored some years back--from the book Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, where the guy (Livermore) talks about reading the tape and getting a feel for what's happening next. I'm sure...

psychoanalitics, I understand what you're saying about it taking doctors and such a very long time. Even so, I would have expected, thru all this time, I wouldn't have traveled what seems like a mere elongated circle. That, perhaps more than anything--the basic lack of progress--is what's so...

thanks, Cheese. I appreciate the words of wisdom. Maybe my post was an attempt to avoid giving up altogether, listening to others' advice. I figure at least some of you have experienced something similar. It may well be that my expectations are a "disillusionment" as well. I feel I should...

I PM'd someone I respect on this, but decided to convey it to the board. Why? Not so that I could personally discourage anyone else from trying it--after all, I admit to being confused as hell right now. That's hardly a position to tell others what to do or not to do. First of all, the title...

Arnie, thanks. I guess that would help if I did something that basic to get things started. :D

Need charting and scanning with IB data

"The DTN/iq feed ~1000 symbols for IRT will run you about $30/month" ---Would this then probably be enough? I think you're right about IRT having the capacity. Some say the language is tricky at times, but probably worth the learning. Am still trying to keep the price down if possible. Thanks.

Need charting and scanning with IB data

Arnie, I've tried researching the scanner aspect of IB, but haven't had any luck. I'll contact their customer service to get a precise direction on where to look. Regarding Ensign, I had reviewed their site, but it seemed more for fancy charting than nuts-and-bolts, strong scanning from what I...

Need charting and scanning with IB data

Great thoughts--'preciate them. AOK--not necessarily needing to scan all the stocks there are. I could, for instance, limit myself to a few particular industries (though maybe that's a "scan" in itself?) In other words, I wouldn't necessarily have to scan 5000 stocks, but more than 100...

Need charting and scanning with IB data

I've been researching like mad, trying to figure the best combination in the subject line along with the most economical method of doing it. I've looked into many of these, and some have too many limitations or are too expensive. Am looking for intraday scans (up-to-the-moment, preferably)...

whats the best stock screener you guys ever used !!!

Trade Ideas does have some good stuff. Thanks. I think, though, am considering Amibroker, Sierra, or Investor RT for my needs. I'm looking for something that has charting and screening capabilities to go with the IB data feed.
