It also closed, as per the rules at the time, for a few hours during the 1997 crash (Asian Contagion).

You are not a trader, you are an evil speculator!

It's Dr. Evil, I didn't spend six years in Evil Medical School to be called "mister," thank you very much.

Unemployment is a quite lagging indicator?

How does he save money by firing everybody (with severance I bet) and then hiring new people (who have to be trained)?

    Monday's plan

I agree in theory, but we did rally for a while after the Bear Stearns bailout and that also didn't change the economic fundamentals.

FNM and FRE bailout bullish or bearish

Bond futures trading down right now. Yields are up.

FNM and FRE bailout bullish or bearish

The bailout is inflationary. Also, Hurricane Ike is headed into the Gulf of Mexico.

FNM and FRE bailout bullish or bearish

But now back to the high of the session. Yet, Treasuries didn't fall as stock indexes hit highs. I like watching the correlation (or divergence of it).

FNM and FRE bailout bullish or bearish

I'm watching the futures trading and the bonds are already rallying back, though still down a ton. This bailout may (or may not) solve the "financial" crisis, but I don't see how this will stop housing prices from declining, the rise in unemployment we've seen, and the higher taxes that will...

Unemployment is a quite lagging indicator?

Of course its a lagging indicator. A company doesn't want to lay somebody off only to realize the slowdown was a blip and now they have to hire and train somebody new. So they wait to lay people off as long as they can.

ETFs vs. index futures (without placing excess cash in T-Bonds)?

They should be equal, but no broker gives you the full rate of interest. IB gives no interest on the first 10K and minus 50 above that (I believe).

    Leftist WSJ Noonan:"It's over."

Let me say of myself and almost everyone I know in the press, all the chattering classes and political strategists and inside dopesters of the Amtrak Acela Line: We live in a bubble and have around us bubble people. We are Bubbleheads. We know this and try to compensate for it by taking road...

    Leftist WSJ Noonan:"It's over."

The choice of Sarah Palin IS a Hail Mary pass, the pass the guy who thinks he has a good arm makes to the receiver he hopes is gifted. Most Hail Mary passes don't work. But when they do they're a thing of beauty and a joy forever. *** [Sarah Palin] Gut: The Sarah Palin choice is...

    Leftist WSJ Noonan:"It's over."

DECLARATIONS By PEGGY NOONAN Open Mic Night at MSNBC September 3, 2008 St. Paul Well, I just got mugged by the nature of modern media, and I wish it weren't my fault, but it is. Readers deserve an explanation, so I'm putting a new top on today's column and, with the forbearance...

    Index futures vs. Leveraged ETFs

If you don't trade too often, just roll them over before you leave if you'll be traveling during rollover period. The reason to trade the current contract is that all the volume is there. But if you won't be trading for a while, who cares where the volume is?

    Index futures vs. Leveraged ETFs

In that case, it sounds like futures would be best. The only negatives are not earning the "market" rate of interest on your cash and rolling over. If you forget to rollover, the broker will automatically close your position. It won't open a new position in the new contract month. I've never...
