What would you choose to develop: IB's api or Ninjatrader8 ?

Well you're always dependent on something. But you're right about FIX. If I were going to set up a professional operation like a hedge fund I'd use FIX and subscribe to the data I needed. I've been using IB's API for 10+ years without problems and it meets my needs as a retail trader trading...

What would you choose to develop: IB's api or Ninjatrader8 ?

I don't want to come across as bashing NT. It seems like a good product and in your case it may very well be the way to go. I'm a professional programmer and have been for 30+ years. That's why my first thought is always to "do it yourself". Regarding latency requirements: Unless you can...

What would you choose to develop: IB's api or Ninjatrader8 ?

IB API all the way. I don't want to be dependent on someone else's software over which I have no control. I've heard enough bitching along the lines: "hey xxx doesn't work any more ever since I took that update" Yes, it's more work but I've built up my own abstraction layer on top of IB's API...

    Greeks and price. Question.

I should clarify that if you calculate the IV *for each strike* you'll find the resulting curve is very bumpy. It reflects the supply and demand of the various strikes at that moment of time. There isn't just 1 "volatility"

    Greeks and price. Question.

Option prices are driven by supply and demand. If demand is higher it drives up implied volatility which is one of the inputs to the option pricing formula be it Black Scholes or whatever. Higher IV = higher option price. The greeks are derived from option prices, they don't drive price.

Proof TWS tick is broken for weeks and useless, misleading

Sadly some people only acknowledge opinions and observations that are in line with what they already believe.

Proof TWS tick is broken for weeks and useless, misleading

Well, no need to be gross. My point was that a fast-changing value can only be represented imperfectly on a normal retail platform. This was demonstrated by examining 3 platforms. If you're saying $tick isn't particularly useful, I must agree.

Proof TWS tick is broken for weeks and useless, misleading

I compared the values of "NYSE-TICK" on TWS with "$TICK" on ThinkOrSwim. They track each other quite closely, though the values seem to be about 30-50 apart all the time. Based on eyeballing the values for a few minutes, ToS appears to be updating every 2-3 seconds. TWS appears to be updating...

Proof TWS tick is broken for weeks and useless, misleading

But TWS doesn't have tick data and never claimed to. In fact they state explicitly that their "time and sales" data is aggregated. If you want tick data just buy it.

trading options for your employer's stock legality

It all boils down to what an insider is. Merely being an employee does not necessarily make you an insider. e.g. I've worked for several medium-large companies as an engineer and never had access to the kind of information that would potentially move the stock. Obviously higher-up management...

any trade a strategy around gappers?

I've talked to a couple of guys that day trade only the same few stocks every day. On the other hand many approaches are quite promiscuous and have you constantly searching for what's hot today. It's really a matter of finding an approach that fits your style.

any trade a strategy around gappers?

I followed "trading for dummies" at http://maoxian.com for quite a while. Not my style it turned out but he did trade stock gappers. Unfortunately maoxian changed his site and I don't think his "dummy" series is there any more. Luckily his posts were captured by various folks such as here...
