    Warren Buffett on Bitcoin

Can you buy a car in BTC? Pay an electricity bill? Or only by condoms and iPhone cases?

    Warren Buffett on Bitcoin

So, BRK has been around for 46 years, growing... do you honestly think Bitcoin will be around in 46 years? In 5 years? :)

    ThinkorSwim vs IB's TWS

The best setup is to have both ToS and IB. IB for low commission and better execution - ToS for their superior charts and options analytics. I honestly would not have been able to trade without having both. And also IB's API. ToS's lack of accessible API is a MAJOR minus for that platform.

    Some basic futures options questions...

I've been trading FOPs on CL and NG on both IB and ToS - they are both OK, I think execution on IB is better - faster and you get better fills. Also, ToS only allows you to trade CL options for next 3 expirations, while IB - as far as you wish, and of course IB's commissions are lower then ToS's...

My breakout trade in copper - how can do better?

Yes, I can see how trailing stops could be harmful to trades where a move is not very big, or market is oscillating significantly, unlike in my trade posted above (at least the move straight down that I traded). That is why I was thinking about writing a program that could use a custom algo...

Inspiring story, but still, they've working in investment banks for decades prior, and no doubt had connections that helped them achieve this success.

My breakout trade in copper - how can do better?

Following bearish news on copper triggered this weekend by default of a chinese mainland company, current glut of copper in China, and a recent breakout of lower Bollinger Band on daily and weekly charts I decided to use the opportunity and place a short-term bearish bet on copper futures (/HG...

    TWS and real-time Greeks

ThinkOrSwim has very good tools for options trading if you are ok to trade manually (w/o API), it has greeks, risk analysis, probability etc... Probably one of the best for retail traders, and no data fees, commissions are much higher then at IB though.

    TWS and real-time Greeks

TWS does show options greeks, however, there is a huge limitation that's been bothering me for a while - they don't compute gamma & theta for puts and calls of the same maturity / strike separately, reporting same values for calls and puts of same strike. Not sure why they do that, given IB is...

    Operating System Choice

Another benefit of Linux vs Windows: with linux - you don't have to worry about viruses, worms and exploits, they pretty much don't exist for linux, and you don't have to buy antivirus and run it constantly while it's consuming at least 1/4 of your computer's resources. But to use Linux - you...

I have 15min OHLC candle data, now want to run test

You can just add a column where you generate your entry/exit signals based on indicator values, and then in another column keep track of P/L based on those signals.

    sell-to-open in an IRA account?

Hmm, I've been selling naked calls on commodity futures in my IB IRA accounts for some time, no problem, as long as I maintain sufficient margin. I usually don't use more than 15% of my account value.

Does anyone use R language the link to IB?

Yes, you can't really build a full-scale back-testing or trading application with R. However, there is a right tool for each task. You can prototype a trading strategy, run models, play with data, and test your ideas in R much more efficiently (if you are familiar with it, or willing to...

Does anyone use R language the link to IB?

There is a few packages: Rserve: http://www.rforge.net/Rserve/ Rscript: https://rforge.net/rscript/ Rosuda: http://www.rforge.net/org/doc/org/rosuda/REngine/REngine.html

Do you use R for backtesting?

You can implement event-driven back testing in Java and still use R to perform statistical/math calculations. There is a pretty good integration library between Java and R, so no need to compromise... If someone need technical help with this - PM me.

Simplest/Cheapest Java API/Broker for automated trading?

Kafe, IB is the best choice really, especially for Java. Commissions are low (for retail) , and their requirement is lower than most other brokers' to use API, unless you are planning to do FX trading. If you don't have 10,000 to trade - it'll be tough to do get into automated trading...

Does anyone use R language the link to IB?

I tried some time ago (over a year) but the 3rd party libs didn't work well. These days I just get historical data using IB API, store it in csv file, and import into R from the file.

nickle and diming OTM options contracts

I've been using this strategy for a while now. Some things I learned: 1) Don't exceed 10-15% of your available capital for maintenance margin. 2) Try to sell when IV is high. In stocks this happens usually after a big drop, but in commodities it is often the opposite. One thing that often helps...
