    who cares if it's a stepping stone to something else, an eu wide stamp duty would be a disaster in itself. for me this would be just as bad as a full-blown ftt, because both kill off any trading i do. again, i admire the brits for their stance in this, but their own stupid stamp tax kills...

    whichever way you look at it, the FDP won't be able to hold out either way; they're simply too small and apparently in germany they're alone. my hopes within the eurozone are really on the smaller nations opposing this. i still think they are with too many to ignore, their numbers are only...

    regardless of any principles and things the uk should or should not do, the uk stamp tax makes my trading just as unprofitable as a ftt would. i don't trade the uk precisely for that reason, and i'm guessing none of us are. so while the ftt is definitely an evil, the uk stamp tax is as well...

    dutch fm has said they have asked follow-up questions with regards to the ftt to other governmental financial institutions in response to a first governmental financial instiution being negative on the ftt. they plan to have a response in february. seems unlikely these other instiutions will...

    i also don't think it's an exageration in the sense that the ftt will cost many jobs, and will only pull europe down further, this isn't about just us (altough, let's be honest, it's the thing that i'm interested in most). the tax itself isn't rational on any level. but capital flows have...

    to be honest, i don't think there is one unless all countries (in reality: the big three) agree there should be a binding vote. also, i'm thinking probably the european commission can propose a final draft (all they have done so far is introduce preliminary drafts, so it's not surprising there...

    dutch employer organizations wrote a letter to parliament today announcing an ftt could mean a 10% (!) reduction in dutch worker-pensions. an ftt would hit the netherlands harder than other countries because of the unique system of pensions. dutch pensionfunds themselves announced they have...

    maybe this has been asked & answered before, but what does the uk labour party think about the ftt?

    no they're not. it's the other way around: shares are taxed if they're traded in the uk, regardless of by whom.

    i consider myself to be a liberal, but i think the term "liberalism" has been lost in translation somewhat, either on my side or on your side. imposing a crazy tax can hardly be seen as classic liberal behaviour, at least not in the meaning i learned it to be which is all about minimizing...

    "even if Germany does not follow immediately" this is very interesting. hopefully the first signs of a marriage in trouble.

    as i posted a few days ago, i really don't believe there's going to be any kind of "eurozone-ftt", only possibly "a coaltion of countries-ftt". so imo malta, like ireland, cyprus and others, just won't join.

    yes, they do. judging from that article they're indeed trying to make this tax more like the stamp tax and that makes more sense. taxing someone based on residency is crazy complicated and has all sorts of loopholes, taxing based on trading in the underlying product has been proven by the...

    i'm no tax expert, but i'm pretty sure they can't (and won't try to, so I wouldn't worry). i've never heard of any kind of tax being applied retroactively without any warning at the time the transaction took place. surely this will never hold up in court.

    i agree. it's exactly the tone of voice that must annoy a lots of smaller countries. either way, looks like a final showdown is coming in the next 1-3 months. i wouldn't be surprised at all if in the end what we'll get is appr. 10 countries going at it alone;
