Stratasearch has a fairly steep learning curve. Characteristics like long run times make perfect sense after moving partway up that learning curve and adjusting to brute force searches.

I agree with your description of an edge, but do not understand the belief that APS can be used to develop an edge and Stratasearch cannot.

It can handle a variety of search techniques and development processes. Avoid the functions you think will have undesirable outcomes and use only those in Stratasearch more suited for you.
