Get rid of Alan Greenspace and the Fed?

Fed doesn’t affect long term growth, but reduces short term growth volatility. If it wasn’t for Fed we would have depressions of 1929-33 proportion regularly. Read some history of US depressions in 19th century for reference.

Just curious, why? He is also bullish on oil and this have major impact on airline profits. In addition all big airlines (with the exception of South West) have problem with low fare competitors. Therefore bankruptcy should rise among this sector. So unless the risk is overestimated in...

    The magic power of compounding

CPI is lagging indicator and much less weight than PPI, IMHO. If we see another 0.8% or so next month, run for the exits.

Best place to live in the USA

I live in Houston and to use trading lingo it is a good short play. :p Incredibly humid, other than shopping mall you will not see people walking. On the plus side real estate is more affordable than comparable cities. :)

BTW, Is it me or Rogers International Commodities Index is very Oil sensitive? Oil+Gas = 44% I am not saying this is wrong, but it doesn’t look like a balanced index either. http://www.rogersrawmaterials.com/page3.html

If you are interested in holding commodities long term the best way to do it is to buy fully-collateralized commodity futures, while having the margins in t-bills. This is much superior than holding the spot commodities. See the attached file in this thread...

Can you think out of the box: show that Capitalism REQUIRES Socialism :D

Hmm, I think that’s actually definition of communism, although I agree the difference is not clear. Communism is a social and economic system in which all (or nearly all) property is public, not private. That is, resources are shared by everyone. Not to be confused for socialism, which only...

Can you think out of the box: show that Capitalism REQUIRES Socialism :D

I understand there are lot of misconception, but since you wrote that “capital doesn't require anything except rule of law” I assumed (incorrectly? ) that you lean toward Libertarianism. OK, here is my try with definitions. I’m sure plenty of people will not agree with them...

Can you think out of the box: show that Capitalism REQUIRES Socialism :D

Perhaps private sector can deliver it much more effectively (per student), but inevitably some of the population will be priced out in a capitalist society. Unless access is regulated by the government, in which case we are back at the beginning of the question. It’s another question which...

Can you think out of the box: show that Capitalism REQUIRES Socialism :D

If so, do you think education is important for growth? If yes, do you think it should be accessible to all, not just the ones able to afford it? Do you think that building infrastructures such as highways, railroads with questionable immediate return on investments but obvious benefits long term...

Can you think out of the box: show that Capitalism REQUIRES Socialism :D

Taric, If you are looking at the productivity level, than you probably know that countries like France, Germany, Canada and Japan for nearly 50 years were steadily narrowed the labor productivity gap with the United States. Here is a table with their productivity: Percent of U.S. individual...

Can you think out of the box: show that Capitalism REQUIRES Socialism :D

Taric, Are Germany and Japan also outliers? Most of the studies that compares socialism/ capitalism boils down to comparing USA and Western Europe. However it is possible that European economy lags are due to other reasons – demography for one. But I do agree with you that the system that...

Can you think out of the box: show that Capitalism REQUIRES Socialism :D

Perhaps wealth distribution does not affect so much growth as volatility. Concentrated wealth can result in an unstable economy. There were several reasons for the Great Depression; many people had maxed out on credit, the boom years of radio and the automobile had run their course, and...

Can you think out of the box: show that Capitalism REQUIRES Socialism :D

If we look at the historic mega long trends we’ll see that the wealth and power distribution tends to go toward more equal societies. Consider the pattern: Egyptian pharaohs, Roman caesars , medieval emperors,French absolutistic kings, English 19th century parliament and US democracy today...
