NHL CBA deal almost done, what stocks will benefit?

Disclaimer: I own shares in the following company. One company that I expect to benefit greatly from an NHL season is CV Technologies, makers of ColdFX. Ticker is V.CVQ (it trades on the Canadian Venture Exchange). I'm not sure that anyone from the US will have heard of this company (yet)...

    Internet TV

For a Canadian perspective on business and the markets, check out www.robtv.com. I haven't tried their live subscription service, but the ability to view archived shows from earlier in the day/week is invaluable for me (I'm a very, very busy University student). In particular, I recommend...

    new Swifttrade deal update

Sounds like Swifttrade is a bit late to the multi-level marketing party, I can already see the fancy Powerpoint presentations showing you how "easily" you can get rich just by expanding your downstream branches. How is this for a slogan: "At Swifttrade you can make money trading even if you...

    AOOR- Anyone following this?

Quite the little pump and dump stock there, 10 bagger in a little over 10 days of trading, then back down to $0.50? And I thought TSX Venture stocks were volatile. ;)

Do markets have to be inefficient for you to capitalize on them?

If one is assuming that market efficiency refers to the strong version of efficent market hypothesis, the only answer to this poll would be yes. Efficient market hypothesis basically states that all information about a company is already completely priced into the current stock value, and that...

    Stelco going to zero

It's probably worth noting that Stelco has in fact been profitable for a number of quarters during their bankruptcy protection (believe it or not), I would suggest doing some additional research into the company before you look at shorting the stock.

    "Somebody's sure to notice this..."

    Canadian Traders

IB offers the lowest commissions of any of the Canadian brokers, but IB will also enforce US PDT (pattern day trading) regulations on you, which is an issue if you don't have 25K USD to trade with. Based on my research, the three brokers that seem to be the most competitive in Canada are...

Oil supply what's the real situation?

I'm not Martin, but I can provide you with a few Canadian companies to research in further detail if you're interested. I live in Alberta, economy is booming due to natural gas, traditional oil and oil sands activity. Fort MacMurray in particular is smoking hot, property market up there is...

Oil supply what's the real situation?

Exactly, it takes a fair bit of energy to produce a barrel of oil from the oil sands. There has actually been some talk on and off about Alberta building a nuke plant to power some of these oil sands projects (as opposed to chewing up large amounts of natural gas).

    Indices and Crude Oil Futures

I agree on this one, I think we'll see the Nas trend downwards until about mid-August.

anybody know of stocks like BOOM (huge intraday swings)?

Wow, haven't looked at that chart in a bit, something like 17 million shares o/s on that one? No wonder it's so volatile.

Is the market really like this?

Agreed. I was taking a look at the top Nasdaq $ dollar gainers last night for the trading day of June 21, one of the top ones on the list went from $2 to $20 within a single day, millions of shares traded on a stock that historically has pretty much zero volume. I didn't double check to see...

    Txn

My vote would be that it is more likely to go down than up at this point, it looks like it is near the top of the current wave, and that a downwards retracement will be coming soon.

Where does the money come from

In the former case, you are the buyer, and someone has sold you shares (via the stock market, clearing house intermediaries, etc.). In the second case, you are the seller, and someone is buying your shares. If that explanation doesn't work for you, just think of it as buying a pig from...

How do people... guess... earning information before it's officially released?

I suspect that part of this would be found from reading the right rumours sites. For example, there are a few particular tech rumour/news sites that offer deep an insightful articles on the current and future state of particular companies (examples such as ATI, Nvidia, Intel and AMD come to...

Are Level II really needed today?

Market depth is a part of a trader's toolbox, I doubt that any serious equities trader would deliberately avoid having access to this. Of course, that's just my opinion, I'm sure we'll now see a bunch of posts advising that I am wrong. :p

    2nd job for traders?

Yup, and even if you don't want to do a job that focuses entirely on outbound calls, there are many call center jobs doing customer service that you can work at part-time/half-time in the evenings (assuming that there are call centers near where you live). Pay isn't all that great depending on...

    Trend Trigger Factor

I ran TTF over a few of my favorite stocks (didn't do any really serious backtesting), and I really didn't like the results of using -100 and 100 as the trigger threshold per the magazine article (it seems to generate buy and sell suggestions that any bonehead with a chart would think to be stupid).

Are there any Remote Prop trading companies for Canadians

I think that Bright supports remote prop trading in the province that you live in. Personally I've poked around into prop trading a bit, and I'm more interested in finding a low cost Canadian discount broker to trade with my own funds.
