    Slope of an EMA

Hi, The slope or angle of an EMA depends on the size of the monitor, scaling factor of the chart ( how zoomed in you were on the chart ), starting point for calculation, unit of the horizontal/vertical axis, etc. Some people use normalized slope. What is the most popular way to quantify...

    Intraday Candlestick Patterns

IMHO: The reliability of a candlestick pattern depends on a lot of factors: a) Context: A trader would need a lot of experience to read the context of the market correctly ............... http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=2845881&highlight=context#post2845881...

How to define a strong trend ?

Yes, I believe EMA's are the most important indicators. I am still learning how to read it correctly. I use the momentum indicators mainly for the entry, not the exit.

How to define a strong trend ?

For the time being, I use EMA's, Bollinger band, trendlines/channels, momentum indicators, and ADX to decide whether to trade along the trend or against it. Still experimenting ............... :)

Any thoughts on using after-hour bars for technical analysis?

Drawing trendlines is a subjective process. But I ***think*** I draw better trendlines by including the bars outside pit session.:) Happy thanksgiving to all !!!

Any thoughts on using after-hour bars for technical analysis?

IMHO: It depends on your trading style. For example, if you are trading ES futures or oil futures, and your method is solely based on support and resistance, will you ignore bar patterns before the pit session, that form strong support/resistance ? I probably would not.:)

Please excuse my ignorance. But who is Mark San Diago, and where is his web site ?:)

How to define a strong trend ?

IMHO: Trading is an art, not an exact science. Anyway, I do not have software to generate HL, LL, DT, DB, HH, LH, etc. I did write some scripts to mark the high, low and 50% retracement for the Globex and pit session, finding out the ascending/descending triangles, etc. After reading...

How to define a strong trend ?

Yes. It may sound silly, but it takes me a long time to develop a filter for bull/bear flag. Just tested it for a few days. Hence, it may turn out to be another piece of garbage.:)

How to define a strong trend ?

One of the fellow members on this message board used an 8-period Wilder Average ( 15-period EMA ). http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21376&perpage=6&pagenumber=1 I have been playing around with this setting. Have not tried Charles Schaap's setting yet.

How to define a strong trend ?

Thanks for the comment. ADX is one of the indicators that I have been examining. So far little luck. The default setting ( 14-period Wilder average or 27-period exponential moving average ) seems to be too long for my liking.:)

How to define a strong trend ?

In a strong trend, a pullback will likely remain as a pullback, and not transform to a reversal. Yes. The details of the pullback could be very important.....

How to define a strong trend ?

IMHO: It would be very hard or even impossible to come up with an objective definition that can be coded. I would like to hear some comments and suggestions. Hopefully, some fellow members may like to share their experience.:p

How to define a strong trend ?

I have been examining price, indicators, other markers, etc., to find a set of conditions under which common reversal patterns would fail most of the time. Still experimenting.:p Yes. In a strong uptrend, price does not close below the twenty-period EMA. In an extremely strong uptrend...

How to define a strong trend ?

IMHO: A better statement may be: It is obvious, when you look at a chart, provided that you had more than 10,000 hours of screen time. :p

How to define a strong trend ?

Hi, Is there any way to define a strong trend objectively ? Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.:)

How bad does the spread hurt in eminis?

When I paper-traded ES using thinkorswim's platform, I got great fills too. Interactive Brokers' demo account gave more realistic results.
