    Discretionary vs System based trading

IMHO trading by 'rules that can't be automated' is the same as trading on gut feel. Either a rule can be quantified and thus automated, then it will be something like 'buy if the market moves up more than x ticks within y minutes' - a very simple momentum entry - or they can not, then the rule...

Eurex is introducing a Mini-DAX Future...

The Mini will be 1/5 of the regular DAX future. Regarding the breakeven point, that's true. And it will most likely also attract undercapitalized traders. Regarding this it's not different from every other instrument out there. But it will also appeal to traders which have enough capital to...

Eurex is introducing a Mini-DAX Future...

I don't see a problem here. For example, current Eurex commissions are 4 EUR/roundturn at IB. Seems reasonable even for a Mini-FDAX with notional value of around 50,000 EUR.

Venezuela: If not pathetic (the cause) & tragic (life), this is comedy

Unfortunately, that's not true. Millions didn't. For example, in the early years of the USSR, collectivization of agriculture caused a massive famine in the early 1930s, killing several million people. Things went even worse in China during the so called 'Great Leap Forward', the most...

What Could Raising Taxes on the 1% Do? Surprising Amounts

There is a problem with the definition of the '1%'. Politicians typically want the masses to believe that the so-called '1%' are people owning super yachts, dozens of luxury mansions around the globe and private jets. In reality the income level to become part of the 1% is about USD 380.000...

    1min Chart setting

Everything is possible. However, it is extremely unlikely. Even turning $5000 into $100,000 within a year or a few requires a rare combination of skill, luck, risk tolerance and a favorable market environment. $500 to $10,000 within a month or three? People would be better off setting more...

    1min Chart setting

Why wants everyone and their mother trade on 1, 3 or 5 minute charts? It may be tempting, but the shorter the timeframe, the harder it gets.

Black swan risk rises to highest level ever, now that is a telling sign!!

Could be. That also increases the likelihood that this time the market will not simply recover immediately.

Who is believing in the current monetary policy is still the right course and why?

Any 'official' definition of inflation that does not include asset price inflation is flawed. That is the biggest problem of them all. Until the Fed, other central banks and policy makers acknowledge this, we will move from one boom-bust to another. Also, until then every discussion about the...

A really small Wall Street tax can make a really big difference

By the way, the currently discussed proposal for an FTT in Europe specifically excludes trading in government debt from the tax. This means that at least some of the people working on this tax are now fully aware that it has the potential to totally mess up the markets it will be applied to.

    Conditional Order on IB TWS

Right click on a parent order, select 'modify' - 'condition'. There you can set a condition - including the price level of another instrument - that has to be met before the order will be executed.

    Let's talk about Microsoft

All those years people have complained that Apple products are too expensive. Now that Microsoft has come up with a 1500+ USD notebook, price does no longer seem to be an issue. Funny. ;-)

A really small Wall Street tax can make a really big difference

The worst thing about the transaction tax is not that it's not justified from a taxpayers standpoint. The worst thing is that it would make the markets that functioned well during the financial crisis more like the ones which didn't function as they should. Think about it: The markets largely...

    Does Technical Trading Really Work?

Trading based on market generated data works, but trading on well known rules, patterns and indicators usually does not. In other words: Yes. And no. ;-)

Updated Version: Pictures of Your Trading Stations

Not entirely true. While every "Retina" display is an IPS display, not every IPS display is a "Retina" display. The Retina display is an IPS display with a much higher ppi resolution than the IPS displays that have been around before. And according to my knowledge, Apple was one of the very...
