At least 50% of success in life comes from luck?

Makes sense to me. There is definitely some luck in it--at least in terms of one's original background. For instance, I had the luck to be born to middle class parents in the western world, not the 12th child of a beggar in the third world. So I've had more opportunities than some...

CNBC Options Action -- you cannot be serious

I think we can all agree that CNBC is just entertainment. I enjoy it a lot. While it appears to me to be impossible for anyone to actually learn anything useful about trading options from that program, I applaud that fact that options are at least being discussed, however poorly, on a...

    Weird experience with Options House

I have a small account that I just opened recently with this firm. I thought that since they have a flat rate for any number of contracts, it might be a good place to trade calendar spreads. To open the account, I transferred a mutual fund into it. I then sold some of the shares of the...

Thanks, I'm looking at the chains now and I see what you mean about slippage. No problems with exercise--only use European, but the spreads are enough to scare me off.

    California unemployment rate reaches 11.9%

Maybe there will be a reverse Grapes of Wrath. Calis will be the new Okies. They'll move to Oklahoma where the (wind farm stimulated) jobs will be. A load o' Joads on I-10 will be great for the Arizona/New Mexico economies. Another possibility: anger becomes so great that they kick all...

    who do you trust ?

For me to trust someone, they would have to: a) make a lot of money trading, and b) not make much money telling other people how to trade A successful trader who has written a book might fill this bill, but only if it isn't a book that's a thinly disguised advertisement for their other...

I like butterflies. They have worked well for most of the last couple of years. Sometimes near month, sometimes the next month, sometimes broken-winged, sometimes diagonalized. Have been doing mostly irons, for no particular reason, just out of habit. With my little spreadsheet with my...

Why do I never get filled??

Doesn't it depend on liquidity? I am often filled at the midpoint on near-mo and 2-mo RUT spread trades. But I have rarely been filled at midpoint on same types of trades using NDX.

    Free Medical School!

Making medical school free still does not allow any sufficiently bright and prepared person to go there. The student would still need support. It is a double-time job to go to medical school, not something one can do while working at a regular job.

Do you guys think opening an hour earlier would effect west coast traders mentally?

I'm already bummed out about having to be up and at 'em by 6:30 every weekday until I kick the bucket. 5:30 would be terrible. I guess I would have to work out some kind of schedule where I get up from 5:30 to 7:00, then go back to sleep.... And those poor Hawaiians. Any Hawaiians or...

If this is trading...then I quit

I love music. I don't have the talent to do it professionally. But I have been playing all my life and I still love it and have a tremendous amount of fun with it. The point being, just because you love something does not mean you have to adopt it as a career. I think the people who are...

    Madoff Cohorts

Heard an interesting interview recently given by one of Madoff's attorneys, Ira Sorkin. Some of the points/topics were: --Sorkin said he knew why the SEC missed this, but he could not divulge the reason due to attorney-client privilege. He made the point that the SEC is grossly understaffed...

Why do I never get filled??

You will have to experiment for a while with whatever underlyings you are trading, I think. There is a whole lot of ground between "get the mid price or walk" and "pay the whole spread," so you will need to figure out what price is usually reasonable to ask for. Once you know your...
