Black Monday: Nuclear Meltdown in Japan

There is a live news stream (with English Translation) http://live.nicovideo.jp/watch/lv43296023 PM has just given a statement. Situation is deteriorating. There is a fire in #4 reactor building. No fuel in reactor, but there are problems with spent fuel. Radiation readings are high - 400...

Black Monday: Nuclear Meltdown in Japan

In some ways, time is on their side. A lot of the heat is due to highly radioactive fission products with short half lives. The amount of heat produced will decline. No idea if it will decay quickly enough to avoid a serious breach of containment.

Black Monday: Nuclear Meltdown in Japan

I expect they will be rotating personal to try to keep individual radiation doses to some sort of reasonable level. It is highly doubtful that radiation levels are anything like at Chernobyl. Certainly not according to the figures here: http://www.nisa.meti.go.jp/english/files/en20110315-1.pdf...

Black Monday: Nuclear Meltdown in Japan

Here is Japans electricity production by fuel: http://www.iea.org/stats/pdf_graphs/JPELEC.pdf I would guess that they will try ramp up gas as the first step in meeting the shortfall. If they need to build new plant, gas may be the quickest to build.

Black Monday: Nuclear Meltdown in Japan

Anybody obsessing about radiation dose can find a lot of information in position papers from the Health Physics Society here: http://hps.org/hpspublications/positionstatements.html

Black Monday: Nuclear Meltdown in Japan

Official reports are that the containment at Fukushima Daiichi #3 is intact after the hydrogen explosion and there is no immediate threat of large scale radiation release. http://www.world-nuclear-news.org/RS_Explosion_rocks_third_Fukushima_reactor_1402111.html On the topic of dose, I...

    Is Nuclear Power Too Dangerous?

Read the Chernobyl Forum report for the best and most complete expert summary of the health consequences of the Chernobyl disaster: http://www.iaea.org/Publications/Booklets/Chernobyl/chernobyl.pdf

Red Alert now issued for Japan

That's not entirely true. Most power reactors in service and under construction worldwide are pressurized light water reactors. There are also a few gas cooled reactors still in service, RMBKs (of Chernobyl fame), and heavy water reactors such as CANDUs. That's pretty much true. Advanced...

Earthquake & Tsunami in Japan Happening Now

The only reliable information is probably what is coming from the operator TEPCO. Here's what they have to say: http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/press/corp-com/release/11031209-e.html http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/press/corp-com/release/11031203-e.html And their main news page here...

Gulf of Mexico is rising in RADIATION rapidly.

Very slightly via traces of uranium, thorium, potassium 40 etc. Coal fired power plants actually release more radiation into the environment than do nuclear via radon going up the stack and the heavy metals in the fly ash. However it is too low a level to be considered much of a risk and other...

    Ipad 2

Requires Flash? What is the mean time between failures? 10 minutes? Is anybody actually using Flash for a trading platform? Thanks, I'll stick with Java which is very robust.

Futurology? Not. Biological and cyber warfare

I'll confess up front that I haven't read Kurzweil's book, and nothing I have seen of what he has been reported to have said makes me want to. The Time piece is basically a load of old nonsense. Conflating computer processing speed with artificial intelligence is just dumb. Just because you...

    Digital vs. analog display support...

I recently hooked up a couple of old identical 19" monitors to an NVidia GT430 card. The sharpness with VGA was substantially poorer than with DVI. Replacing the VGA with a HDMI to DVI cable made a significant improvement to image quality. I reckon the GT430 is a decent, inexpensive (and...

    The Liberal Climate Hoax?

Typical misrepresentation of what scientists are saying in an attempt to bolster unsupportable nonsense. What does Carl Wunsch actually say: "I believe that climate change is real, a major threat, and almost surely has a major human-induced component." . . "Some elements [of...

    1,840 Earthquakes in 2010

There are some horrific stories coming out in the wake of the Christchurch quake: "A Brisbane urologist has described how he and his colleagues used a hacksaw and a utility knife to amputate the legs of a man trapped in the earthquake rubble in Christchurch."...

    The Liberal Climate Hoax?

Now this is complete hogwash. The message from climate science has been the same for years regardless of the political complexion of the government of the day - in countries right around the world. Scientists have not changed their position at all to suit the political situation. The Bush...

    The Liberal Climate Hoax?

Cache Landing, Do you really think that climate scientists are not aware of the Milankovitch Cycles? Do you think the American Geophysical Union is not aware of Milankovitch Cycles? The AGU is by far the biggest association of scientists in the physical earth sciences in the world. Do you...

Israel: Iran sending warships to Mediterranean Sea

You are without doubt a grade one idiot. An all out nuclear war would indeed not extinguish all life on earth. But it would cause devastation on a scale that would make the world wars look like a border skirmish. Nothing to be concerned about then eh?
