    Let's talk probabilities.

The "old" Forbes used to say: "You make more money giving advice than following it", so writing a book may not be a bad idea. Larry Williams, Jake Bernstein and other figured that out millions of dollars ago :)

    tax problems

AAAintheBeltway: That is my understanding. Since I trade the same small portfolio (~10 stocks) I would typically have both wins and losses every month in every stock and hence simply don't trade in December. For next year I'll re-open a futures account and just do mini's in December.

    tax problems

You have to be careful. The problem is that you'll not be allowed to take losses in securities you've rebought within +- 30 days. The losses will be used to adjust the cost of the securities and moved to 2002. As an example if you had $100 gain and $200 loss, but was caught by washloss, you...

Considering switching to IB for QQQ Trading

I trade QQQ's on ISLD with IB virtually every day. Works great. Never had any issues. Super fast. Highly recommended

    IB Improvements (Part 2)

I guess I must be particularly dense today. I simply cannot make the Excel integration work with the demo account. It used to work just fine. I've downloaded the latest ddedll.dll and tws.xls, and rebooted. It wants an account number: I've tried S0000 as indicated, edemo etc. I simply will...

    Backtesting software

I have used metaStock for years (with eSignal) http://www.metastock.com. Do a search on metastock for several threads on metastock and it's pros and cons. I'm in the process of switching to Wealth-lab, due to the much better programming and testing capabilities.

    Gunslinger Day Trading System

for what it's worth: I always assume $100 slip and commission each way per contract. If a SP system cannot handle $200 slip and be net positive, you're going to have a tough time making money with it imho.

    Gunslinger Day Trading System

I have trade both the full sp and the mini ES. Today I would only trade the ES due to the much faster fills, availability of volume in real-time and a bid/ask with volume. I also like the the smaller mini size, since I can control 5 mini's better than one full sp. Pit traded SP's are slow and...

Thoughts regarding OmniTrader 2002 (Not just a poll!)

let me play echo here: I used OmniTrader a few years ago. Basically worthless. All it does is continiously optimize some very simple technical systems. It would change it's historical signals when better system combinations were found. I at some point ran a look-forward test of their...

IB DDE Excel: is it now possible to automate trailing orders

The best place is http://msdn.microsoft.com. Go to the "Code Center" and do a search for DDE. Several good examples.

    Instant replay for charts?

I believe that OmniTrader has such replay functionality. At least the version I used years ago did.

Automatic Order Entry API for IB

With the API you can just do them (OCA) yourself. I'd prefer that IB simply provides the basics, and let us program whatever else we need ourselves

    MIT vs. Stop

I have found it useful to think of MIT orders as LIMIT orders that turn into market orders as soon as a trade happens at the limit price or better. So e.g for a long position buy stop (loss) are below the entry price, MIT or LIMIT's are above the entry price.

    NQ-ES Shorts Easily Available?

Remember that with futures shorting is equal to selling, so as long as there is someone wanting to buy, you can short/sell. With the high liquidity in ES and NQ shorting should never be a problem.

    how to close datek account??

I have a friend who've been trying to close her account since September. I think they are playing some sort of "number of open accounts" game. She had difficulty getting them to write her a check (took weeks), then she got a few cents in interest and they charged her $15 maintenance (this was...

    pci cards

simply do the calculation: width * height * bytes-per-pixel. E.g 1024 by 768 at 15 bits (hi color) requires 1.5 MB of graphics memory. Details: 1024*768*2/1024 = 1,536 kilo bytes ~= 1.5 MBytes PCI do have some performance limitations with raw graphics performance when compared to AGP...

    Horror Stories

My only real "horror" story was about a year ago. I was trading with CyberTrader 3.0. I was short INTU (I believe) and the position moved against me. I decided to get out using Cyber's "intelligent order routing". As it turned out the "intelligent order routing", also called CyberXChange...

    using stop orders with island

I have to agree wtih NIcodemus here. I use stops mostly to get out of trades gone bad. Since I mostly trade QQQ's on ISLD liquidity has pretty much ensured that I get a fill within 1 to 2 cents of what I expect. Often I get the bid/ask due to the depth of the book. A nice combo is to use a...

The 16% solution and bye-bye trading

andrasnm, Best of luck with your new ventures. I would like to thank you for all your constructive participation on this board. I've learned a lot from you and I'm sure others have as well. All the "rich" people I know have made their money in real-estate. I also know a few lucky people...
