    IB 2009 gain/loss summary reports a total mess !!

2009 is is the closets I've ever had IB's 1099 match the tradelog generated Schedule D1. This year the error is only 26 cents! What a joke, though. Seems like the numbers should add up correctly.

    Weinstein Trading and Fading

Robert, I've enjoyed your journals over the last year, so I thought I'd offer my perspective. Over the 10 years where I've traded aggressively, I've had two "black swan" events. Both were much bigger losses than my models "predicted", and came over a very short time frame. The worst was...

IB - Straighten out your f'in Bookkeeping!

FWIW, the last few years I've never been able to match the total proceeds as reported end of year by IB, with the total proceeds generated by tradeLog based on importing the trades from IB. There has always been a small difference of less than $25. Since reporting a number different from IBs...

How I stopped making the same mistakes in 2010 and started to make more money

Here is what I did (and still do) to overcome deviations from the plan: I log both the system entries and exits and any manual overrides I may have done. This allows me to see how much the overrides cost and help me identify ways to improve my systems. In general, overriding helps a little...

Lenders Pursue Mortgage Payoffs Long After Homeowners Default

I think the issue is that lines of credit, many second mortgages etc. don't get eliminated in a foreclosure. They are personal loans, not loans against the property.

Never let a profit turn into a loss. (Good or bad advice)?

It's neither good nor bad advice, it's silly and meaningless advice. Exits should be defined in the context of your strategy. Almost all losers will show gain at some point and most winners will show a loss at some point. I don't see why you'd want to trade the noise around the zero line.

going independent from day job with chronic health problems

try to apply for health insurance and see if you even can get it. If you have any chronic conditions you'll most likely find it hard, if not impossible, to buy private insurance.

    swing trading versus day trading

In my opinion, the better answer is the run both day-trading and swing-trading systems. I run a family of systems diversifying over both markets and timeframes. Generally, I would expect a swing system to have much better average trade size than a day-trader. Combined with less commission...

    Lie Groups and underlying trading

It seems to me that the real issue is finding a good metric, not necessarily invoking Lie groups (or other abstract constructs). Personally, I think the metric is different depending on the type of system (time frame, style etc.) you're looking at, and "finding" the metric is one of the key...

Lev ETF long term. NOT EVEN ONE???

Most leveraged ETFs are designed to match the daily price change not the longer term. Just do a little calculation of daily returns to see that 1x compounded is not half of 2x compounded.

10% unemployment but H1B visas accelerating

Another reason companies like H1B employees is that they are relatively "stuck" with the company. The employee can only quit if he/she has another job lined up with someone who is willing to take on their H1B sponsorship, while the company can terminate them at any time. Generally this...

    IB's TWS: 64-bit Compatible?

TWS on 64 bit java does not install, in my experience. I posted a little hack I came up with to work around this limitation. I can now say that the hack has worked well for a few weeks. http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=2633271#post2633271

    Scams only?

There is a huge benefit in finding a mentor early on. Having the opportunity to see a true "pro" in action is very valuable, including how they handle adversity. I often buy books to get new ideas, and subscribe to magazine for the same reasons. I would never, however, sign up with some...

    TWS on 64 bit Win7

thanks for the input. It seems to be a 32 bit vs 64 bit java issue, at least as far as the TWS installer is concerned. I'm staying with a 64 bit JVM for other reasons, so at this point I'll settle for my little install hack.
