    Canadian live quote?

I may be biased, but I would argue that there are actually some interesting TSX listings for day trading, such as some of the HBP ETFs (e.g. oil, nat gas, gold stocks).

Venezuela oil 'may double Saudi Arabia'

Problem with the vast oil resource in Venezuela is that they will find it very difficult to attract the capital and knowledge that are required to effectively exploit the resource.

Options are the best (and safer way) to trade trend-following?

We have similar thoughts, though my personal line of thinking would be to specifically focus on ITM options (currently developing this myself). My rationale behind considering options vs. underlying is as follows... Pros - Defined risk (specifically being long puts/calls), with no risk of...

    Question about stock/equity financing

There are a few key differences: - Bonds are debt - Bonds typically require payment of an interest coupon, then the principal amount at maturity - Bond holders have priority over shareholders (equity investors) - Equity investments show up as share capital on the balance sheet If a...

    Career advice for salaried worker

That initial quote is very true, particularly for businesses with relatively low barriers to entry. Sometimes you need to choose the "security" that a job can provide you (I say security quite loosely because many jobs are not really all that secure), and there are some professions with...

Huge Arb Opp on BBI vs. BBI-B

My first thought when I saw the two classes of shares (and price difference) was voting rights, and it does appear that my initial assumption was correct in 2004 (looks like Class A was 1 vote, Class B was 2 votes at that time). There were also some proportion differences at that time (i.e...

    need 22" monitor advice

I would suggest checking out the Samsung 2343BWX, it's a 23" monitor with a slightly oddball resolution (2048 x 1152), and very cheap (about $180CND, so probably a bit less in US dollars). Bought one a couple of months ago, have been very pleased, and would easily consider picking up a couple more.

Got into trading after college, 1 year retail, 1 month prop so far...I have issues..

I have seen this type of trading before (i.e. unrealistic expectations re: stop losses), so I sympathize with your situation. That said, it is also important for you to realize that stop losses of an amount that is fairly close to that in a relatively tame stock are actually quite important...

Divergence between energy stocks & oil/nat gas...

There is much more to the picture than just hedging, such as future production expectations (increasing/decreasing), gas/oil weighting, environmental perception (e.g. oilsands vs. Baaken), integrated vs. non-integrated company, etc. I would again argue that much of the oil/gas industry is not...

    D Day

I agree that today's end of day selloff was interesting. I was watching the market on and off throughout the day, and thought it was odd that it was so flat at 0% change (at fairly key levels too). Canadian markets appear to have sold off a bit harder than US markets did. Will be interesting...

Divergence between energy stocks & oil/nat gas...

Anyone else been watching energy stocks over the past month or so, particularly some of the Canadian stocks? Oil has been holding up surprisingly well (given declining US dollar), and natural gas has been performing fairly poorly (not much of a surprise given the fundamentals). The...

    GS shareholders not happy :)

I can't blame the shareholders, one would think that Goldman board should have a fiduciary duty to the shareholders. I understand this whole "pay for performance" concept, but at some point you also need to reward your equity investors.

    Dubai - Residential lending exposure

Has anyone here seen any articles regarding the residential component of bank lending exposure in Dubai? The reason I ask is that there has been so much focus lately on Dubai's commercial debt issues, yet we are seeing effectively nothing regarding the potential residential lending...

Do the 1x inverse ETFs decay the same as the 2x and 3x?

I posted a few weeks back about this...yes, the 1x inverse ETFs will decay, just not as badly as the 2x ETFs. I would suggest plunking some numbers into Excel to simulate volatility and compare to 2x (e.g. how much does something decay if it moves +3.00% -2.50% + 2.80% vs. 1.50% -1.25% + 1.40%...

    Nat Gas ETFs

There are a pair of Natural Gas ETFs that are traded on the TSX, double leveraged. HNU is double beta positive, HND is double beta inverse.

Robert Shiller: Stocks Massively Overvalued; Worried about Stock and Housing Markets

Shiller is probably more worthwhile to listen to than most, given his track record. Irrational Exuberance was an excellent read (both editions).

Canada's unemployment rate falls for first time since recession

Substantial decreases in the value of Canadian housing was essentially deferred by extremely cheap money during the past 6-9 months (e.g. 5 yr rates as low as 3.75%). The market was pretty weak during late 2008, and it wasn't just the beginning of the recession that was causing it. One would...

why do people laugh when I mention day trading?

The irony is that our society places high value on the quantity of money that one has, yet simultaneously fears taking the risks (e.g. quitting a "secure" job to trade) that may be required to earn large quantities of money. People often fear what they do not understand and/or could not possibly...
