    valuating nondividend stocks

I've studied options a fair bit academically (happen to be covering real options right now for example), and that is an interesting concept. I'll have to think about this one a bit and get back to you. I can also say that I haven't run into any textbook stuff yet at the undergrad level relating...

    Chart watch - TZOO

That's an interesting point, though I wasn't thinking about manipulation per say. Basically it is the chart that is attracting me, as well as their improving fundamentals. That said, the stock is still very expensive by traditional valuations.

    valuating nondividend stocks

Actually, you are not entirely correct. One method of valuing a company is called the "free cash flow method", and it uses WACC as its discount rate. The theory behind doing so is that a company could arguably be broken down into a collection of projects. So you basically discount the free...

Still monitoring TZOO, action today wasn't enough to make me want to buy.

All I have to say regarding this new distressed seller post is yikes!

    Chart watch - TZOO

Well, the big drop was basically due to this stock being overhyped, it hit some pretty stratospheric valuations over the past couple of years. Typical dot com boom and bust cycle, with the exception that this company actually makes money. With regards to using some of their cash (or...

Just for fun, check out the P/E ratio of TASR...

...Yahoo says 585, but based on $0.02 EPS for 2005, should be more like 480ish. But still, yikes!

    Chart watch - TZOO

Anyone else want to comment on this one? My strategy on this one could be considered to be "bottom picking", but I think that $17-$18 seems to be a fairly good level of support. TZOO used to have astronomical P/E ratios, P/E is still quite high (trailing is 41 or so), but the stock price is...

    Anyone see these "4X" infomercials?

I have a mid-term coming up in a week or so, so I may not attend the session (probably better to go to my class that afternoon). If I do, I'll be sure to get some info on the costs involved, and post again on this thread. I'm betting that it's probably some sort of upfront cost + ongoing...

    Stock market music

Agreed. ETN, DI and Afterhours DJs are all stations that I listen to while studying. You might even hear a couple of my mixes on AH, I used to be a trance DJ. :p

More Americans are losing their homes

I'm personally predicting something similar (if not quite so serious) for Alberta. Alberta has been booming for a few years now due to high resource prices (our provincial government consistently runs very high budget surpluses, this year was something like $11-$12 billion), as well as large...

More Americans are losing their homes

I'm quite familiar with mortgages (at least in Canada), so I have a few answers for you (and things to consider). Regarding exposure to mortgage default, there are a few things that may protect banks to some degree: - One factor is mortgage insurance. Lenders up here in Canada are...

    Hi boys

I suggest that you short UTSI and go long CHULA as a pair trade. You may need to scale in and out of the position until your desired level of return is reached.

I suppose that someone could technically call that music, but I agree that it was terrible.

    Anyone see these "4X" infomercials?

I was randomly flipping through channels last night with my girlfriend, and an infomercial on "4x" caught my attention. Yet another one of those "pay us for our black box trading indicators with lots of pretty green and red arrows to tell you when to buy or sell", only this one is specifically...

    valuating nondividend stocks

Just to add to this, you could also instead estimate future free cashflows, then apply a growth metric and apply appropriate discounting (one method of discounting being WACC). I'm heading out with the girlfriend right now, will post a formula for you later.

    Chart watch - TZOO

I've been watching TZOO for the past couple of months, it's been in a downwards channel since the beginning of December. Stock moved upwards Feb 14 on news of share buyback, and has since retraced a bit. Point is, I think that TZOO may be moving out of its downwards channel, going to be...

    Iran: The Next Iraq?

Judging by the current rhetoric, I wouldn't be the least bit suprised to see the US attack Iran. I'm seeing very similar tones to those of news stories prior to the US invading Iraq.

URGENT: Does your credit rating affect your leverage?

That personally suprises me. I realize that the structure of margin accounts greatly reduces risk for brokerages, but would a broker really want to open up a margin account for a client with prior bankruptcies, debt repayment issues, etc.? There must be some purpose behind requiring a credit bureau.

    Housing Rolling Along 2

Yes, I recall reading that earlier in this thread. It's staggering to think about because of the risk that these types of people are exposing themselves to. If this guy has the slightest cashflow issues, he could sure eat up his savings in a hurry.
