    IB Data Feed Problems?

Same here -- my data is really lagging.

    current quotes to excel spreadsheet

I get about 3.5 mb/s. The problem is not with the data getting to me. The problem is that excel is too cpu intensive and crowds out my esignal app and everything else during periods of high throughput. I need solutions to reduce the load on the CPU. One way to reduce the load is too...

    current quotes to excel spreadsheet

Thanks for the info. I have always hated the limitations of DDE, but eSignal is still in the early '90s with their technology (well, not 16 bit anymore, at least) so I used it. I'll definitely look into RTD to see what that does.

Grant- This is what I think happens: ESignal consists of two main apps -- the data manager and the GUI. The data manager contains the DDE server and also puts out the live data to the GUI via ports. The result is that the live data is streaming to the data manager, which in turn feeds the...

EdgeHunter- Thanks for the response -- I'll look into your recommendations. I agree wholeheartedly with your multithreaded assessment of eSignal. I consider that a major liability for their package.

    current quotes to excel spreadsheet

I've been experimenting lately with using eSignal's DDE connection to excel only on about 60 stocks and 13 columns of data. I find that during "fast" markets, such as the opening, that eSignal doesn't update data (quotes and charts) though the data is being streamed in. The excel sheet...

    Tudor Jones in 1987

Yeah, you're probably right -- the futures were really deep that day (not!) and the bid-ask was at least 20-40 times wider than usual as I recall!

    Tudor Jones in 1987

I think he was selling a long time before the opening! He had been looking for this trade for some time; he was using 1929 as an analogue to the action in '87. This had been setting up for months.

A hard science degree is a big plus and can be used to differentiate you from other candidates. The institutional traders I've known are in fixed income derivatives (options, swaps, credit derivatives) and all have degrees (usually advanced) in math, physics or some other hard science.

I left one out, the post-Gold Standard Period (1934-2005): Avg. Growth: 2.772% (s.d. 4.66%) or nearly three times the average annual growth rate of the Gold Standard Period.

Avg. annual per capita real GDP growth rate from 1800-1899: 1.399% (s.d. 3.36%) Avg. annual per capita real GDP growth rate from 1900-1999: 1.939% (s.d. 5.45%) Avg. annual per capita real GDP growth rate from 1873-1933 (U.S. Gold Standard Period): 1.040% (s.d. 5.65%) So it appears that...

My knee-jerk reaction was to agree until I started thinking about Bruce Kovner, William Eckhardt, Richard Dennis, Victor Niederhoffer, Helmut Weymar, Michael Marcus, etc. All of them either have PhDs or were graduate students. The best traders I've ever met were-overachieving, analytical and...

WallStGolfer31, I was considering something similar about 20 yrs. ago and was in the masters program in economics at NYU. Back then it was a pretty poor program by my estimation. In the past few years they have gone on a hiring binge and really improved the quality of their faculty. I...

Been using Bloomberg. Need something new. eSignal?

From eSignal itself in response to the question about how much data they carry: "10 days of Tick, 120 days of Interval and 10 years of Daily History is stored on our Servers" In other words, not too much for analytical purposes.

    Excel

Not sure what you are trying to do, but eSignal has a DDE link for Excel that will update a spreadsheet continuously with the last price, high, low, etc. However to create a data series for charting for example will require some coding. An alternative is the ActiveX control eSignal offers...
