How good is IB and other retail firms with locating hard to borrow securities? Say I want to short some goofy preferred, lets say GS-A, this stock will always be hard to borrow but will IB or other retail firms locate it for you?

Yes this is what I was getting at. But I guess I want to know is how the stocks of the DOW of lets say 1978 is preforming compared to the DOW index of 1978.

If you were to pick any point in time in the past 100 years and short the stocks of the dow and go long the dow(via futures or whatever); how would this strat fair over the course of 10, 30 or 50 years? So you would never adjust the stocks you are short.

I dont doubt that GOOG is a good company. But that still doesnt answer the question of why in this environment it is a buy with a 16 P/E? 250, 300 as a price is a non factor as it relates to the rest of the stock world. If the worlds P/E's are bleeding, what is to stop GOOG from bleeding with it.

I agree about the futures part. Try equities. Read all of elitetrader from 2001 to 2004. If you can read all of that, then you will have a ton of ideas to get your going.
