CL is a wild beast you can lose money just as fast as you make money and slippage is an issue if you attempt to do size. If you can handle this beast one trade a day setups are possible but beware, fast bucks = fast loses.

the SPY gets arb'ed pretty quickly. trade the SPY if your already in cash. ES is pretty good if your doing size but the back and fill nature of this index might not suit certain trading styles. there really isn't that much of a difference IMO.

If he doesn't want to get into the ETFs, which he should be doing as a beginner, then the YM can be a pretty forgiving contract for a novice in terms of tick value and liquidity.
