What basic two things am I misunderstanding about moving averages?

thanks Jtrades. That makes sense, as too simple. Does that apply to using moving averages in combination?

What basic two things am I misunderstanding about moving averages?

ah, that makes sense; thanks! So does that suggest I can't really come up with a trading idea based on moving averages visually by looking at bigger situation? Or only if I slowly go through a chart that shows the daily details? If so, any ideas which charting service [ideally free, but willing...

What basic two things am I misunderstanding about moving averages?

well, I guess to clarify my second question, am I imagining things that going with trend of the three moving indicators pointing to the same thing is generally a good trade and if so, how do I backtest it if I don't do programming?

What basic two things am I misunderstanding about moving averages?

I suspect this is going to be an embarrassing question/s: First, why when I look at a shorter term chart such as just below. The current price of SPY is above the 3, 5, and 10 day SMA. But, when I switch to 5 year chart it appears to only be above the 10 day average? Second, doing a visual...

Is their a Site to BackTesting effect of VIX on Assets/ETFs

stepandfetchit: Wow; thanks for this!!! I can only look at this very quickly right now. But looks very helpful; Is the bright green line the VIX itself? I can't immediately tell what it represents.

Is their a Site to BackTesting effect of VIX on Assets/ETFs

oh, looking at the chart more carefully and rereading. I see it's showing there isn't much advantage to investing when VIX >20. I think that's what you noted. Assuming that's correct, sorry to miss that the first time!

Is their a Site to BackTesting effect of VIX on Assets/ETFs

dtrader: First, I wish there was an emoticon for gratitude--thanks so much for your efforts/work. I also wish I could buy you a virtual beer. I hope I'm not pushing my luck or exposing my ignorance as a helpless cause to ask for some explanation. I'm guessing this indicates overall it works well...

Is their a Site to BackTesting effect of VIX on Assets/ETFs

thanks for your responses. WeToddDid2: yes, I definitely understand what the VIX is and when it hits certain levels it indicates a regime change in market psychology. Thus, it can be a good indicator for figuring when to be in or out of the market or shift assets. I'm surprised it isn't used...

Is their a Site to BackTesting effect of VIX on Assets/ETFs

Hi: I am not a programmer nor do I intend to learn (unless very simple), but I am interested in backtesting the effect VIX levels have on various assets/etfs. Ex. when the SMA of VIX is > 20, the VQT returns x%. Is there a website that allows one to do that without programming yourself; if not...

Need Help Finding a Negative Stock News Information Source?

Hi: I know it's easy to find sources that display the biggest % drops for stocks on a daily basis. I was hoping to find a news source that offered that, along with displaying a reason [if known] why the stock/s dropped--especially if it was an earnings announcement. Does anyone know of a...

thanks for the quick responses. I'll ck out some of the resources. I'm a bit less confident than you guys that it will be so easy for me, but I will try and remain open to other ideas. The simpler the better given I'm not used to doing this. thanks again for your help!

Need Help Researching Portfolio with Gold in It

Hi: I’m interested to to see how a portfolio of 50% stocks [including dividends] and 50% gold [the commodity, not stocks] would have done since 1975. This is a bit trickier than just looking up stock prices on Yahoo finance given a gold etf didn't exist until rather recently. I'm also curious...

Need help finding Discount Broker with competitive money market/savings rate

as noted, you're a good guy Bob--thanks! As an fyi to anyone coming upon this thread I got a potentially good idea from a financial advisor when I posted this question on Linkedin who suggested looking into buying a money market ETF at a brokerage house. Not clear to me if rates are as good and...

Need help finding Discount Broker with competitive money market/savings rate

thanks for the clarification. So if I read your chart correctly. I could earn 4.76% on Australian liquid funds--of course subject to exchange risk. Any idea of how much fluctuation in exchange risk there has been in the past [i.e trying to figure out my realistic downside; ex. of tends to...
