How do people trade in the pits?

Although the pit still has excellent liquidity, from the trade sheet attached, most of the volume has migrated over to the screen. Remember though locals on the floor do a lot of the electronic volume.

How do people trade in the pits?

90% of the locals down here are scalpers, buying/selling and then turning around and offering/bidding for a few ticks profit. Some of the traders, including myself, use a handheld device in the pit to arb against the electronic trading (grains/livestock trade side-by-side). Let's say I just got...

How do people trade in the pits?

I'm going to try and answer a few of your questions here. When you're a trader and you make a trade (for example the S&P 500), you announce your bid/offer (example: 4 at 3.40, would imply sell 4 contracts 1333.40 or whatever its trading it around now). Then, when someone says buy them or you...

How do people trade in the pits?

I work as a lean hog trader at the CME in Chicago for my own account. I see open outcry markets as very efficent and sometimes more so than the Globex system, as I trade on both. Big order flow and executions come in through the pits, so you can see where the real action is. We don't usually...

    lean hogs

Just seeing the price movement of which ones move up more than the other or vice versa. Also, looking in to USDA reports and upcoming news helps too.

    lean hogs

Do you trade Globex or route to the pit? There is excellent liquidity down here, and if you go mid-market from the screen, someone will usually give you a fill.

    The Elite Trader's Account Size

There are a lot of traders having accounts over $100k, no matter what you may say. These traders usually don't come out very often and brag about how much they make.

What happens if DOW drops 300 points?

I believe a 5% move down in Dow, S&P 500, or Nasdaq futures will delay the opening.

    basic qns on Globex/floor trading

I think trading will probably move to the screen in a little more than 5 years, maybe 7 or 8, which is probably a little more optimistic than some. Still a good amount of volume on the floor to keep it open.

    basic qns on Globex/floor trading

I trade on the floor and arb between it and the screen, and yes, hogs are fungible traded on the floor and Globex. I probably do about 300-400 contracts on Globex every day, depending on volume and the opportunities that are present. If you do trade online and route to the floor, you'll get...

Forex Trading by a Futures Pit Trader

Currently have no positions on. Got stopped out on 200k of USD/JPY (its all the way down to 111!). Account is down $1.5k since start, I'm having my son take me into the Euro FX pit tomorrow to see how he trades off the flow.

    hit my goal, now what???

If you love trading and still have a working system, I would say keep it. But, heres what I do, take a lot out and start working the capital up again. I trade hogs in the CME pits exclusively and make well over my account balance every year, and every time it gets over $75k what I started the...

Forex Trading by a Futures Pit Trader

Yep, but just had a huge drawdown on GBP/JPY and now my account is at break/even, down from a $3k profit. Singer/Wenger still clears here, but they're known as SWM Trading now. Don't know too many traders who use them down here in the hog pit, there are probably a few over in the S&P or FX pits.

Here is the closed positions profits page. Obviously this performance probably might not be able to be maintained, so I am tightening up my risk strategy a little more, because I let the GBP positions go to -$800 before they turned around. When I'm watching the screen, I don't usually have stops...

Forex Trading by a Futures Pit Trader

Went short the USD against EUR, JPY, and GBP before the Durable Goods and Unemployment numbers came out. Locked in some profits and have some positions on that are improving from the other day (specifically the short USD/JPY position). Here is the open positions and I will put the closed...
