"The blackest day in my career as a trader."

You are a good man for paying them back. Pretty much no-one will share a story like that, took you 5 years but you did. Rest assured you're not alone. There were/are and will be many people making those kind of mistakes. Not many would share.

Can one strategy work "most of the time" in any market condition?

This used to be true for futures traders but less so with introduction of micro and mini contracts. You can also diversify by time frame and long / short, entry and exit technics. I trade stocks and there no such barrier there. With the exception of PDT (<25k) that limits your options on the...

Can one strategy work "most of the time" in any market condition?

No single strategy works all time. Combining multiple uncorrelated strategies covering diverse set of market conditions is as close as it gets to a holy grail of trading. I wrote quite a bit about this in Fully Automated Stocks Trading if you're interested.

Very bad experience with Grandcashfx Ltd.

The withdrawal alert is fake and is a huge RED flag. They have a list of all of those combinations in a plain HTML. var nameT = ["Someone from Sweden", "Someone from Peru", "Someone from Indonesian", "Someone from Ghana", "Someone from South Africa", "Someone from U.k", "Someone from India"...

What is your opinion of CANSLIM?

I did CANSLIM for some time, also used their MarketSmith service, but ultimately found it difficult to trade as it takes quite a long time to see if it works. Their market timing model gets quite choppy occasionally. Backtesting their model is nearly impossible because of data requirements. It...

    Assess my strategy, please

It seems like you've got good number of trades to make it statistically significant. My guess is slippage assumptions will be your main culprit. You absolutely will have slippage on your stop loss orders. Likely on entry too, depends how you enter. If LMT - test with price going slightly below...

Can you use your losses to lower your capital gain tax?

Another route to take it to you report your trading as a business income, then you can deduct all costs, also, you get taxed on your Net Gain after all expences so loses are naturally included into your net gain calculation and you're not taxed unless you make money. If you have no other...

    Fully Automated Stocks Trading

For new readers, here is a quick reminder of why live results typically don't match backtests. If you are trying to come up with a formal systematic trading method it is critical to address all of them: Backtest doesn't have enough trades => not statistically significant. Backtest is run on bad...

    Fully Automated Stocks Trading

Random notes looking at my trading YTD: Most PL this year came from shorts, ~60%. Positions sizes are ~30% smaller on average than in first half of 2020. There were no major systems changes. 2 new "slower" systems added for registered accounts. 1 previously disabled system was re-worked and...

A Self Made Man - Myth Or Reality ?

The less young I become the more I believe that most self made men will agree - they were just more stupid than most to keep pursuing that opportunity that eventually made them rich. Val

    Canadian Newbie

Another Canadian here. Remember, no trading platform has some magical tools that will make you profitable. I personally think IB (Interactive Brokers) is best for us as a broker. Low commissions, low margin rates, broadest market access, highest borrow availability inventory, reasonably priced...

    Andy's Less Random Walk

That's life and nice track record so far. Are you a discretionary trader? Why kind of strategies are you using? What's your trading frequency? What is your position size?

    Some art related to trading/investing

Oh man, that's brutal.. This is ultimately why I'm not putting more than 5% into single stock position anymore. With traditional measure of "risk" well under 1%. Regardless of back test results. This is just the nature of the beast. 100% of invested capital is always at risk. Stock may go...

can re-routing disable in IB API?

You don't have control over which exchange order gets executed at with SMART. Depending on a volume/type of your trading FIXED commissions might help, at least making them predictable.

    How to hedge SPY?

Return is irrelevant in this case (I simply used a fraction of account in that test). Just ignore numbers on that axis. Hedging ability is represented by the Combined curve. For hedging, you would want the Combined to be as flat and as close to 0 as possible.

    How to hedge SPY?

It's RealTest. Here is my script TestSettings: AccountSize: 100000 StartDate: 1/1/10 EndDate: 1/1/22 TestName: SPY_HEDGE Template: defs Allocation: S.StartEquity Commission: 0 Slippage: 0 Strategy: SPY Using: defs Quantity: (S.Alloc * 0.1) / FillPrice...

    How to hedge SPY?

Just ran a simple test that buys both VXX and SPY at the open and closes at the close. 1 SPY to 0.15 VXX seems to be optimal ratio for that period. Not too bad for hedging considering simplicity. PS. VIX on the pictures = VXX

    Fully automated futures trading

One cool thing about their MFA optout is that you can't withdraw money using it. So an intruder is kinda stuck trading your account. Re IB gateway - another option to automate is to put it in a docker container, configure health rule to a presence of a Java process inside and set auto restart...
