Anybody try to short financials today?

The s.e.c ban on short selling really only effects stocks with high short interests i.e fannie mae, freddie mac, lehman brothers. Bank of america has a two percent short interest so hopefully i.b will get its act together to allow you to short that one. Of course if you want to short 10,000...

Countrywide deal going to fall through?

right now the acquisition price is supposed to be $8 and the stock is trading for 5.48 so it's trading like there is a 40% chance that the deal goes to $2 so I don't think many people will be shocked if the deal price gets lowered or falls through completely. Bank of America basically has a call...

    IBKR earnings

I guess you are right, old trader just saw this on dow jones Most of the shares will be sold by Chief Executive and Chairman Thomas Peterffy, who only sold a portion of the company to the public in the initial public offering last May. "[He] believes the firm is worth at least $33.50 ... that's...

    IBKR earnings

Maybe you are right, not clear why they would sell a few shares at a higher price Here's the text "After the close of the markets on the day of the auction, an approximately 30 minute live auction will commence process will be used to determine a clearing price. If a clearing price is achieved...

    IBKR earnings

If they don't get 33.50 it looks like they still sell the stock at the minimum bid which could be 20 bucks for all we know

    Fannie Mae

careful, it's heavily shorted which I found out painfully when the government started buying mortgage backed securities and the thing went up 70% in 4 days, I got out before that but now without a significant loss. Options seem to price in that their is a legitimate chance of bankruptcy, so I'm...

    IB and Reuters News Feed

My understanding was that IB was working to get the reuters feed closer to real time than one minute although I can't really compare it to anything since I don't subscribe to a seperate reuters feed. As for Ameritrade they claim it is real time, it usually seems to be real time in terms of news...

    IB and Reuters News Feed

you get dow jones news for free if you are an apex trader which means you make 5 trades a month or $50, if you have an ameritrade account but aren't an apex user you can get it for $30 per month. Interactive Brokers offers you a deal for reuters news headlines for $2 per month (non-pro, $65 if...

    IB chat: what went wrong?

I couldn't even get through to ib tech chat on monday, yesterday I got through to tech support chat to inquire why I couldn't use IB trader chat and they said it was a problem the developers were working on, annoying I hate it when things don't work.

    What is safe?

The chinese Renmimbi under your mattress if you can get some, seriously the only currency that gets revalued upwards fast to enough to combat inflation. Gold bars and canned food in a cabin in the woods with a shotgun works well as a backup see barton biggs latest book.

    Visa IPO...Overhyped?

visa is so afraid of this market that they are moving the ipo up to the same day the fed cuts rates. This is a huge ipo, the winner is JPM who sells a nice chunk of shares. I wouldn't buy here unless you already got in on the ipo price. MA short looks good for next week akamai

South Africa ....a country going to hell !!!

While the political situation is a mess, zuma is a real threat to democracy. I have to say that crime for tourists is really pretty minimal, My parents are from there and my grandparents still live there so I've spent quite a bit of time there. I was there most recently at the end of last year...

    IB and Turbo Tax

you have to wait for them to redo them, apparently a tax law change. They were available earlier, probably with some mistakes.

    IB and Turbo Tax

They don't want to be liable for any mistakes, better to let you pay a third party provider to do it. sucks to do it by hand though if you don't want to spend a lot on software.

    Adobe unusual call buying

no, I think msft taking out adobe if the yahoo deal falls through is more probable, but still unlikely since msft seems to be more focused on search than saas models of revenue

    Asia trading.

According to the EU minister "this is a rational reaction to the possibility of a a more pronounced slowdown and recession..... but hopefully the markets will calm down". So we really have nothing to worry about if we are long stocks. lol

What do you think of IBKR - long?

My experiences with tech support have been all positive despite many posts to the contrary. I use the online chat feature rather than actually phoning.

    Dow Jones News Service costs?

Dow Jones is typically free if you are an active trader with Scottrade or TD Ameritrade. To purchase it outside of those programs you are looking at $30 a month through TD Ameritrade. This may require an account with them though. I don't think you can buy direct from Dow Jones. Reuters is fine...

Did IB get freaked out so it still holds 100% intraday margin in some markets?

Are you saying that IB has the same margin requirement for futures as stocks, if that's the case why do I need 100,000 liquid net worth to trade ordinary futures when I can trade single stock futures at 20% margin.
